  • IE Hanging when using localhost

    May 23, 2006 05:23 PM|Richard8888|LINK

I am running HP pavillion zv5000 with Xp Pro Sp2 (only installed yesterday so still not activated). I have installed IIS (ver 5.1) as per my other two computers. I then launched my web site http:\\localhost\index.asp and can see my home page. When I then click on a link the IE window hangs. I know that my web page works correctly as I have tried it on both of my other PC's running XP Pro SP2 and have no issues.

I have monitored ports to make sure that IIS and inetinfo.exe is listening. I have pinged localhost, 127.0.0.1 and the computer name to prove communication. I have also completely un-installed IIS and re-installed (uninstall= add/remove, then boot into safe mode and delete ii6.log, inetpub and inetsrv directory). I have also compared configuration in between the three PC's for user access levels, folder access permissions and can see no differences.

The only item which gives a hint is that if I show Windows Task Manager-> processes when attempting to use the web page the CPU time on dllhost.exe immediatley goes upto 99% and stays there until the IE window seems to time out.

Would you hava any thoughts? I am trying to get this laptop working for several exhibitions on the road starting on Thursday PM. Thanks

    Hi Richard -

That is a tough one to diagnose.  Have you installed all of the latest hotfixes?  Even though you have SP2, there are many hotfixes that must be installed on top of it in order for IIS / IE to function correctly.  I recently installed my new laptop with XP SP2 and noticed that it didn't run smoothly until I finished all critical updates from windowsupdate.com.  (it takes several trips).

    Well, how about a simple hello.html ? http://localhost/hello.html?

    Anything in event log?

I would use WFetch to make sure it's not the IE problem and to see what the results are - do you get any content, only headers... and is eventlog saying anything?

Hi Bill. Thanks for your suggestion. I spent a couple of hours downloading the updates, but, still have the same issue. I am going to try the WFETCH executable next.

Thanks - I tried hello.html, and, same as my home page, no problem connecting initially, the problem is with then making a link to another part of the web-site. I am going to try the WFETCH executable next.

Hi Tom. Thanks I will try WFETCH next, should probabaly take me about an hour to read the notes and to understand what to do and understand what is says. Will get back to everyone then.

Everyone - Just as a question - I cannot make neither head nor tail of the log file. Would it help if I posted it? Would anybody look at it for mer and let me know what are the valid parts?

    Hi Tom.

I carried out a WFETCH.exe. The main page (index.asp) worked okay, it started and finished and showed no issues. I then switched WFETCH to look at one of the linked pages (/update.asp?classID=4380...). There was a very long time in between the request and the repsonse.I have attached the WFETCH log. If you could help me interpret what it is saying that would be great. I have never tried to read a log file previously.

I did not attach the IIs6 log as it is pretty big, even though only open since yesterday evening when I upgraded. Do you know what I should be looking for in this log file?

For completeness I will just describe the application. It is a scoring system for equine competitions, designed to be used on a stand alone laptop in a field. When all scores are collected you can connect to the internet and upload the results in the organisations web pages. Now, the first time I boot up I get the "home page". From here I can click on a hyperlink and get the link page containing null values retrieved from the database with no issue, when I then click on any simple links on that page to navigate around the site, it makes every link no problem. However when I use the web site to input a score, this is when it hangs. At this point this application does not hang on my other computers. I therefore do not think it is the application, but, the platform (IIS interfacing with IE ). What do you think?

Also, my exiting computers (that run this site) have "server extensions" in web site properties. The laptop has a tab called asp.net instead of "server extensions". When the page hangs, it hangs for 90secs, which is the timeout period for an asp issue. Do you think I am onto something here?

I do not know how to read the eventlog....

    a) Your wfetch result indicated that IIS is working fine - you got 403 directory listing denied. Meaning the default doc is either not set or IIS can't find it and does not allow listing of the folder.

    b) So you mean it only hang when you input score? any shell scripting involve? do you have norton or any other antivirus that might be blocking the script ?

    c) You can go to event viewer - administrative tools - open it up and and check if there's any error related to IIS. like w3svc etc.

    Absolutely.  Post your ASP code.

Instead of posting the code I went back to an earlier version of the scoring system which did not have the .asp code. I restarted the laptop from a complete shutdown and tried again. It suffered the same issue. IE first hangs when I try to write to the text file (by changing a score), after this it hangs whenever I try to make a simple html connection. With everything appearing to work okay I wonder if it is my user permissions?

I have the following set up:

mmc-> IIS -> default web site properties

home directory c:\EI_Scoring ticked are read, write, log visits & index this resource

Directory security-> only have ticked Integrated windows authentication (even if I tick Anonymous access and use IUSR it hangs)

EI_Scoring folder options view -> unticked use simple file sharing

EI_Scoring right click properties security I have all the following as having full control:

Administrators, Creator owner (which always clears itslef after ticking full control), Elaine (Laptop/Elaine) {Elaine is the user name for this logon}, Everyone, Internet guest account, System and Users (Laptop/Users).

Any thoughts would be good (or did I give up on the .asp thing too quickly?)

    Thanks

Again, what do you use to write file ? fso ? file system object? If it's permission, you should get permission denied, etc. not hang. Hang symptom typically due to script blocking by certain third party product.

My thoughts are that you should address the things we ask you about and not jump to trying something else.  We offer advice and you basically ignore it.  It's hard to help you when you don't follow-up on what we post.  :)

Could your anti-virus be getting in the way?

You are absolutely correct! When I am asking for help I should co-operate and follow instructions. Apologies. I disabled script blocking, disabled Norton AntiVirus and disabled windows firewall. Still no response, still hanging. I cannot post the EI_Scoring.zip file as I dont have permissions. Could I e-mail it to you direct or ftp it somewhere?

    Tom.

I just posted an apology, but, for some reason I cannot see it. I already disabled script blocking and that did not work. However due to me following your and Bernards suggestions properly, this time I disabled script blocking, Norton Antivirus and W firewall, then did a complete re-boot and tried it again and it worked, the update actually works!!!!!!

I am confused as to why it didn't work previously when I disabled script blocking on Wednesday and it did not work then, I did not do a reboot at that time though...

Look, thanks for your help. I can carry on with my demos now with the right piece of equipment. I will be back though as I am getting more and more invloved with IIS applications....

    Again, thanks.
