    Same problem here.

Web Platform Installer 5.1 attempted to install this but got a 404 error.

Has Web Platform Installer been fixed?  I reported it was broken too.

  • Re: Error 404 on External Cache 1.1

    May 21, 2021 09:29 AM|lukos|LINK

No, you cannot install External Cache from the platform installer, it fails with 404.

This is a critical bug for those of us who are maintaining production environments and needs to be fixed asap. Since I cannot configure any new windows servers until this works. All the other direct links I have found in forums are broken also and point to blogs etc. that have since been removed/renamed.

    Hi everyone

Thanks for posting - I'm going to share a bit of background on what is probably going on in this situation and any others with installers no longer being available via WebPI

The WebPI feed is owned by the individual product teams and maintained by me.  As you are aware, the feed contains a wide array of products and no individual team or person could possible maintain each and every entry.  It is the responsibility of the teams owning the installer to own their entry, since they best know when to update or fix it.

In the current scenario, a subset of installers hosted on the download center are signed with a certificate that is no approved and have been automatically removed.  The owning teams are required to re-sign and re-publish their installer for it available again.  In several/many cases, the owning team has elected not to re-sign and re-publish their installer, most likely because that version is no longer supported.  That is why you are receiving a 404 when you attempt to install.  For products that are still officially supported, please let me know.  I can try to find a owner (it's sometimes unlikely, as the people I originally worked with are no longer part of that team).  For products that are no longer supported, it's my guess that they will not be brought back online, but that decision lies with the individual product team that owns it

Hope this provides some clarity - thanks

    Chris

I need to set up the reverse proxy.  The External Cache 1.1 is a required part.  We really need to be able to install it.

External Cache 1.1 is a dependancy of Application Request Routing 3.0. If ARR is still supported then something needs to be done because it effectively prevents IIS from being used as a reverse proxy since   ARR can not be installed.

I don't think this is an issue that should be dismissed.  I really don't want to switch to alternative software  just for a simple reverse proxy. What ever you can to do to get any additional information would be appreciated.

Thanks for the extra details.  I'm reaching out to an internal contact to see what can be done for the ARR 3.0 entry and the missing External Cache 1.1 installer

    Thanks

    Me too

I have servers that I can't finish building until this is resolved.

Request routing is pretty basic functionality for a Web server these days.

Maybe they should put it in the core product instead.

    Hi Smoyse ,

if you have another server or staging/test server you can find the installer there,

in C:/users/user/appdata/Microsoft/web platform you will find all web platform downloaded Msi.

Blocked here as well. Attempting to set up a local dev environment to do some app changes that have to be done this week and can't proceed without this.

I too need it, as mentioned above External Cache is a dependency of Application Request Routing 3.0. Allowing us to install ARR and not allow the necessary dependencies is crazy!

    I also need ARR 3.0.

Has anyone found an alternative source for the External Cache 1.1 dependency?

Has anyone found an alternative source for the External Cache 1.1 dependency?

Yes, the Wayback Machine has saved the installer executable.

    https://web.archive.org/web/20200802223752/http://download.microsoft.com/download/C/A/5/CA5FAD87-1E93-454A-BB74-98310A9C523C/ExternalDiskCache_amd64.msi

It's also possible to copy the %ProgramFiles%\IIS\Application Request Routing and %ProgramFiles%\IIS\External Cache folders from a server with ARR 3 installed to another server.

The fix for this has gone live - I would wait a few hours for replication/cache updates before attempting this.  The fix was to remove the external dependency on External Cache, as the ARR package now contains the required bits

Thanks for posting - what version of WebPI are you using?  I'm checking the 5.1 feed and there is no longer a dependency on External Cache 1.1 in the ARR v3 install entry

That was it, thanks!  I had an offline copy of the msi because the download would fail sometimes.
