The website has forms authentication. If the user isn't authenticated, it redirects to the login page, but it's embedding a string in parentheses.
redirects to https://website/subweb/(S(5twawvix0d114u3w5qpd22cs))/login.aspx
What configuration item is embedding this string and how ti I remove it?

I agree with mbanavige. The URL looks like you have enabled cookieless and IIS send session via URI. So please go to your web.config and set session cookieless=false. Or you could set session state in IIS manager site node->session state.
