Guys, new to IIS. When creating config items in the IIS admin UI tool it seems some setting go into applicationHost.confg files and others into Web.config files under the Sites and Virtual Directories within the site. What is the difference between the applicationhost.config files and web.config files?

Generally the app host config is for settings on the overall Webserver and Web config for the sites/apps

You can see what file it writes to in the GUI in the status bar at the bottom when making changes.

IIS Manager tends to save settings in web.config as much as possible, but if a section is locked down and changes must go to location tags in applicationHost.config, then it writes there as well.

If you really want to know the ideas behind, you can read articles such as https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/iis/get-started/planning-your-iis-architecture/the-configuration-system-in-iis-7 You can also refer to open source projects, such as Jexus Manager (an IIS Manager clone).
