Although the gallery was deactivated before, you were still able to install and use Webmatrix as it is until the end of January 2018 - without support.
The problem is now, that there are dependencies to Microsoft Platform Installer 5.0 - it seems that Microsoft decided to discontinue the delivery of packages required for normal php development at the beginning of February.
For instance this set of files:
php-5.5.38-nts-Win32-VC11-x86.zip --> WebMatrix would show PHP 5.5 instead of "Unable to read PHP settings."
SQLEXPR32_x86_DEU.msi
sqlncli.msi
As WebMatrix is the perfect all-in-one tool (php editor with testing opportunity at localhost, db editor with sql support, ftp client for publishing) for my students I will continue to use as long as possible. I'm sorry that Visual Studio isn't beneficial
- it's just too confusing for the students - WebMatrix is/was more like an educational edition.
If you have installed WebMatrix before February 2018 on a computer you can copy the following folder to another computer (nearly the same path, maybe different username):
Afterwards it is possible to install WebMatrix, downloaded from common download portals. My current student tell me that they were able to install and work this way on their private machines with the help of the folder Web Platform Installer.
thanks for the update. But question remains the same. how to find the checkbox to enable PHP on webmatrix. there must be a way to enable it. is there any settings or registry entries that can be changed for the checkbox to show up. Please let us know if
there are any anybody know about.
I guess you did not read carefully my post above - or maybe - my description is not precise enough.

You find the PHP setting at Site -> Setting -> PHP settings.
In my case of the installed package (provided via the Web Platform Installer initialized by WebMatrix) there is a checkbox right under PHP settings where you can activate PHP and even a choice box where you can choose the PHP version.
I have read your post correctly. but in my case the issue is exactly as shown in the 2nd image posted with the original issue.. may be you have missed it. posting the url once again please take a look at the image. there is no checkbox.
All of my students got "Unable to read PHP settings." as well. But then I provided them the package mentioned above and the the error message disappeared and instead you get the checkbox and the choicebox.
ohh apologies..I misunderstood your post.. just one more question. how did you change the path to point to the new php location. is it only applicationhost.config or there is some file where changes are required.

Hi,

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Web Platform Installer

Maybe this helps.
Ciao
