I installed IIS 10 on my Windows 10 machine yesterday. After the installation I opened the IIS Manager, started the service, selected the default web site, and chose "browse website". I end up with a screen showing the 404 error message.
Maybe this isn't as simple as I thought - have I done something wrong ? Did I miss steps ?

The extensibility of Windows/IIS means a web site monitoring localhost:80 can quite often fail (the default web site case). Before knowing how to fix that, try to create a new web site at localhost:8080 (or port 8088) to see if IIS indeed works or not.

Thanks - that was the problem (needed to use a different port).

Then it is very likely that another software occupies port 80 so IIS cannot use it. If you want to further troubleshoot, you might try to follow my blog post,
If you don't want to go any further, using other ports is usually OK.
