  • System error 87 - The parameter is incorrect when trying to start w3svc service

    Jan 13, 2013 11:06 PM|eros.villas|LINK

Getting 'System error 87 - The parameter is incorrect' when trying to start w3svc service. Original Title: System error 87 - The parameter is incorrect . When I try to start the w3svc I get a notice saying, "System error 87 has occurred. The parameter is incorrect." What does this mean?

Anything else in event log? IIS system config error - 87. saw this many years ago in IIS4/5.
Would recommend try to uninstall IIS, take out WAS as well, then reboot and resinstall IIS.

Here is the only log i've been able to find

I've also since noticed that through server manager --> roles, the role "Web Server (IIS)" is no longer listed. I've added that role so its now listed, but same issue persists

    Hi,

    eros.villas

The World Wide Web Publishing Service (WWW Service) did not initialize the HTTP driver, and was unable start. Please verify that the HTTP service is in an executable state.  The data field contains the error number.

As we all know that the Internet Information Services (IIS) World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC) requires both the Windows Process Activation Service (WAS) and the HTTP service to function correctly. If the HTTP service is not available, W3SVC will not be able to process HTTP requests.

In order to resolve your issue, you need to stop and restart the HTTP and W3SVC services.

Please notice that you must have membership in Administrators, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority to perform these procedures.

For details about how to do, please check the link below:

I would suggest a reinstall if restarting/rebooting didn't help, refer steps posted before.

    Hi Catherine,

Had already tried that as per the intial post

I should mention that the Windows Process Activation Service (WAS) and the HTTP services are both started (and have been restarted, as has the server)

no - turns out there are kerberos issues in the domain. possible related, still being worked on

ok, so the issue ended up being that the server had lost its auth into the domain... reinstall of IIS resulted in it failing with "windows process activiation service - installation failed"

rejoining the server to the domain, IIS reinstalled with no issues, IIS services started with no issue

Ha! member server in a domain. why does it lost 'link' with the domain in the first place? that's still mystery :)
