I'm having a problem on serveral webservers but I can't seem to figure it out.

I have a site pointing to a local folder on the server (ex. c:\websites\website\subsite)

    When I'm trying to view http://subsite/file.aspx I get a 404 error.

When I run procmon to see what its looking for its trying to find file.aspx in the directory

    c:\websites\website instead of c:\websites\website\subsite

As a test I took a copy of file.aspx and put it in the C:\websites\website directory and it worked fine....

Has anyone run into this before? We're currently running Windows Server 2003R2, IIS 6.0

    404 error ii6

I believe it is not a strange thing. Please review your IIS site settings carefully. There must be a wrong setting or two.

Well I've checked the sites and its not the only site we have (I think we have between 60-70 sites) but this one the exception. And a pretty strange problem since to my knowledge the website which is given a "home" directory, should not be aware of what's above it...

If you have suggestions on which settings I should carefully look at I'd be more than willing to do that.

It's somewhat clear that you must have set the root for the http://subsite/ web site to be C:\websites\website.

That pretty much confirms my suspicion.

Okay so I'm still having this problem sorry I haven't been back in a bit.

    Drive Setup:
    E:\websites\SmartSource Data Collector\util\content\Loadbalancer

Which contains an index.aspx, and a .jpeg file.

    Website setup:
Home Directory: (A directory located on this computer)
E:\websites\SmartSource Data Collector\util\content (Vendor Software installed in a local that our Management wants all web content)

    In IIS:
I click on the website (SmartSource Data Collector) I can see Load balancer
Click on LoadBalancer I can see the aspx and the jpeg file.
I explore LoadBalancer from within IIS I get the right directory.
I try to browse those files and I get a 404 error that page can't be found.
I click on Properties of LoadBalancer go to Home Directory and it is set as "The Designated Directory" with local path \LoadBalancer
I even tried to delete the folder, then create a Virtual Directory pointing to E:\websites\SmartSource Data Collector\util\content\Loadbalancer and that failed.

In fact all subfolders of the main site all give me 404 errors no matter if they are real folders or virtual folders pointing to other locations.
I've tried putting the LoadBalancer folder in other locations in E:\websites and it fails.

But if I copy the contents of the LoadBalancer folder into the root of the website then go to URL something like http:\\test\loadbalancer\index.aspx it works.

I just don't get it but I don't think its the home directory as I have this site working on another server in our load balanced environment with the same isntallation directories etc.

Heck I even went as far as to export the site to an xml then recreate it on the problem machine (Changing the IP of course and the local anon account) and I'm still having the same problems.

What URL are you browsing?  You need to use http://website/loadbalancer/index.aspx

I ended up instead of trying to put the file in the proper "Folder" in the file system placing a virtual directory inside the website and pointing the Virtual Directory to the appropriate folder on the drive making sure that the new folder had the proper NTFS permissions.
