  • Compiler Error Message: The compiler failed with error code 128.

    Hello everyone,

I work for a small Windows web hosting company with around 30 IIS webservers.  It's a mix of Windows 2000 and 2003 servers.  The 2003 servers run both .NET 1.1 and .NET 2 (well, 3.5 SP1) sites with the clients being able to choose for themselves what version they want to run.

We've suddenly started seeing a weird issue on just one of our servers for clients who use .NET 2. The server itself is Windows 2003 R2 fully updated. Some clients have started to see the following error when visiting their application:

Compiler Error Message: The compiler failed with error code 128.

We can fix this for the most part by either recreating the application, recycling the application pool, performing an iisreset, and in the most extreme of cases, rebooting the server.  Any combination of those things usually fixes it, and it will be fine again for a few days to a week.  It's not happening within the same application pool either.

Has anyone seen anything like this?  The results I've found indicate a faulty isapi filter or an out of order filter, but we've ruled that out.  This server in particular had been in service for the better part of a year before this started happening as well.  Any suggestions are welcome.

     Thanks.

In the mmc have you verified the isapi filters at both the "Web Sites" level and at the individual web site level? Do you share app pools between web sites? If so, give every site it's own app pool.

Have you looked at the permissions on C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files? I've had to add additional accounts update access to this folder. You could try granting "everyone" full control. That way it should never matter what identity the compiler get launched as.

Do you see multiple folders (duplicate files?)  under c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root? Maybe stop IIS, delete everything and then let them recompile.

This is very low level but you can try it. Download process monitor from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx. It will show you all file and registry accesses by your system. Set it's "history depth" to 1 first. Look for "access denied" statuses. Find the VBC or CS compiler and see what it does.

I had this issue.  Rebooting server also did not help.

Subsequently, I just stopped the default website, which is not used at all.  I recycled the app pool  & the application is normal again.

I tried many suggestion from on-line.

    Only re-booting the server helped.

My issue happened after publishing the website from VS2008 SP1.
