I am running 2 IIS7 servers on Vista, on the same network behind a router. I use alternate external ports to access them, and via the router setup virtual servers to redirect those ports to the proper internal IIS port. The router is a Dlink DIR-655.
The issue is, sometimes the server(s) is connectable, often times, not. All day yesterday both were up, and working perfectly, then I checked them today and both are down.
I have tried:
Rebooting the router (soft reboot through the control panel) - Didn't help
Power Cycling the router, unplugging for 30 seconds - Didn't help
Restarting the server on my computer - Didn't help
Rebooting my computer - Didn't help
I can't think of any other thing that I can do to make them work again if resetting everything doesn't fix it.
I have been fighting with this problem for LOOOONG time, and am fresh out of ideas (and hair). I would REALLY appreciate if someone could help me resolve this so I can finally move on to greener pastures.
Well it looks like your router and/or your ISP connection.
Try a firmware upgrade for your router first. Check your ISP hasn't blocked your traffic.
Thanks, I was thinking the same thing. Is it possible for Comcast to realize that we are running servers on non-standard ports? The external ports we use are 7807 for one and 3112 for the other, and they both get practically zero traffic. They are just little
home sites, maybe 5-10 hits a week on one, and not much more on the other.
If it is the ISP, how come it would be inconsistent rather than permanently blocked once they do go down?
I will try re-installing the firmware to see if that helps too.
You can use network monitor on the IIS machine to at least make sure that the issue is with the router and that the packets are never reaching the IIS box or not reaching on the right port.

No luck with a firmware upgrade. This is maddening.

Great suggestion, thank you! I will give that a try and report my findings.
