Spurious 304, 403, 404 errors on IIS after failed XP SP3 install

I am seeing a lot of 304, 403, 404 errors on IIS after a failed Windows XP SP3
install. The pages themselves are generally are served OK but are missing out a lot of images and/or CSS files.
Effecively, IIS is reporting these errors for files that 100% absolutely do exist!
The SP3 installation failed and had to roll back. Since then I have been seeing this problem. I have completed a successful SP3 installation since then, but the problem still remains.
I am part of a small development team and no other system is seeing this problem, which rules out an issue with the web application itself.
I have tried removing and re-instating IIS on this PC, but that doesn't help.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be the cause - or better still, the
solution to this problem...?

You may need to synchronize IWAN, IUSR account after IIS reinstallation. You can follow the step-by-step
article to remove and clean reinstall Internet Information Services (IIS) versions 5.0, 5.1, and 6.0.
Before you remove IIS, please backup IIS configuration and copy to another location since you may need one of the step to remove IIS folder. This is the note copied from previous article.
The default location of the backup is the %SystemRoot%\system32\inetsrv\MetaBack folder. By default, C:\Winnt is the %SystemRoot% folder in Windows 2000 and C:\Windows is the %SystemRoot% folder in Windows XP Professional. If you want to save your backup
file to another location, you can copy the file from this default location to another location. Keep a copy in the default location to allow for an easy restoration.

I have tried the remove/re-install off IIS as described in that article, but the problem still exists.
Thanks for the suggestion, though.
