Lost websites after reinstallation of IIS - how to retrieve?

IIS Admin Service was hanging my server upon startup, no choice but to remove/reinstall. After I reinstalled IIS, I reinstalled Exchange, which is now functioning properly.
However, all of my sites, including those for Sharepoint and Outlook Web Access are now gone. I have a backup of the old metabase.xml file from before the re-installation of IIS. If I go to IIS Manager, right-click, New Webiste (from file) and point to
my backed up metabase.xml, I can see all of my "old" sites when I select Read File. When I select a site to import, I get an error message stating "Error: Invalid Signature".
1) Am I receiving an "invalid signature" because of the re-installation of IIS/Exchange?
2) How do I recover these sites?
3) If I restore a metabase backup from before the re-installation of IIS/Exchange, will I render Exchange useless?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What version of sharepoint are you using?
How customized was that sharepoint. Is the sharepoint database still in tact?
