Our web server has been running for quite some time serving a number of applications, but yesterday it suddenly stopped working. No matter which application I try to access I get the "Server Application Unavailable"  screen.

In event viewer I get the following not-so-helpful message "Failed to execute the request because the App-Domain could not be created. Error: 0x80004005 Unspecified error".

I have tried to run aspnet_regiis -i and I have checked and set all persmissions on the folders (these should not have been changed anyways).

Does anybody have any ideas to what might be wrong?

    We're running IIS 6 on WS2003 SP1 with ASP.NET 2.0 applications

Makes sure IIS_WPG has permissions to the content files and folders.

Thank you for the link. It seems the problem was related to security permissions but not any of those listed in the linked resource.

An admin had accidentally changed the permissions on the file system, among other things only the administrator-group had access to c:\windows
