  • How do I determine which version of IIS is running

    Sep 22, 2010 09:58 AM|andrewMat|LINK

I have two new machines, one a Windows 7 notebook, the second a dedicated server for hosting, running Windows Server 2003.

How do I determine which versions of IIS are installed on these machines?

'Help, About' isn't available (as far as I can see), as IIS is managed by MMC.

    Cheers,

    Andrew

    Hello,

This is not a click or something but information about where to find the details.

The LOCAL MACHINE Branch of registery contains the Version  information for Windows 7.

The Starting Branch is in (HKLM) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \InetStp\ VersionString value of 7.5.

Note: The Spaces are for reading purposes.

This does not determine which version of IIS is running. It only determines which version came with the OS. It could have been upgraded, etc. So - I will ask the same question. Is there a way to determine which version (including service packs, etc.) is running on a server?

    Thanks.

This does in-fact tell which version is installed on the server. Thanks for the info.

Does anyone else find it incredible that you would have to open the registry to obtain the current version of IIS? After all, there are several applications that have specific version requirements for IIS. What happened to the ability to easibly obtain a version?

It only determines which version came with the OS. It could have been upgraded, etc.

The version of IIS is specifically tied to the OS, it cannot be upgraded without upgrading the OS.  In the post from Hades666, those OS versions always map to those IIS versions.

I did not realize that. That is helpful information. :)

     Thanks.

At least on Win 2003 server RC2 there is no About IIS under IIS Manager --> Help  (Only about MMC and about IIS Manager which doesn't help)

However I just saw the in my case the answer is right here:

    1. Open the IIS Manager

    2. Select the Main Node of the tree on the left (Internet Information Services)

    3. On the right pane you will see columns Computer / Local / Version

    4. Under version it says IIS V6.0 for this case.

    Hi Andrew,

Just open your browser and type 'localhost' (without quotations) and you will be able to get the installed version information...

    Cheers bro.!

check the version for the %SystemRoot%\system32\inetsrv\InetMgr.exe file.

    In powershell:

    [System.Diagnostics.FileVersionInfo]::GetVersionInfo("$env:SystemRoot\system32\inetsrv\InetMgr.exe").ProductVersion

See here for other methods to script getting the version.
