It started as an error 500 but I've resolved that. Now, IIS7/FastCGI is returning an error 404 when I try to access a .php file that I know exists, but serves other files ok...
http://support.ashleyschool.co.uk/index.html - serves fine
http://support.ashleyschool.co.uk/index2.php - the same file just with a different name, doesn't serve... and returns 404, as does
http://support.ashleyschool.co.uk/test.php - a file containing only the phpinfo(); statement
Any suggestions how to resolve this please?

What steps did you take to configure the php handler?
This article has the steps written in detail. If you did follow the steps as outlined in the article, request the page from machine running IIS and paste the detail error message you get.

I've done a fresh re-install of php from those instructions; now getting an error 500 for php files.
I've checked that iusr has the relevant permissions to read & execute, but it doesnt like it... any ideas?
I'm able to process the .php files on the command line using both php.exe and php-cgi.exe - it does output sensible code... the problem seems to be in that being redirected through IIS to the outside world...

Can you pls send a request from the machine running IIS and paste the detailed error message you get? If you can collect freb logs, that can pin point to the error really quickly. Follow steps
here to enable freb and collect logs.
