I've been trying to install the IIS Manager for Remote Administration compoment from within the web platform installer (4.6) on my local IIS (windows 8.1) and I'm always getting an error. Here's an excerpt from the log:
Action start 11:19:23: LaunchConditions.

MSI (s) (3C:24) [11:19:23:572]: Note: 1: 2228 2: 3: Error 4: SELECT `Message` FROM `Error` WHERE `Error` = 1709

Can anyone help?

I haven't tried installing the IIS Manager for Remote Administration, so I can't tell you what the problem is, but why not just install the IIS Management console from the Windows Add/Remove features, and use the IIS Manager to remotely connect to the other

I'm not following...I mean, I'm under the impression that I need to install this component to be able to use my IIS console to manage a remote server.

Internet Information Services (IIS) 7 Manager for Remote Administration provides end users and administrators with the ability to securely manage remote IIS 7 servers from Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.
A Web server administrator can perform almost all IIS 7 administrative tasks while site owners and developers that have been delegated administrative privileges can use IIS 7 Manager for Remote Administration to make allowed changes to the remote Web server.
IIS 7 Manager offers the same user interface available on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 to ensure a more consistent experience when managing and configuring the Web server.

Again, I'm not following.
I've installed Windows 8.1 and all the components for IIS (yes, even FTP which I don't require). What I need to do is connect from my machine (the one where I've installed Windows 8.1) to a server running Windows 2008. The server is configured to allow remote
connections and the way to do this with Win 7 was to install IIS+IIS remote admin. Only after installing IIS remote admin was I able to see the Connect to remote server option on the IIS admin console. When I had Windows 7, I was able to connecto to the server
by using the local IIS admin console.
How can I do this with Windows 8.1 when the IIS remote admin addin returned by a search made through the web platform installer doesn't install ?

Can someone answer this please? I have exactly the same problem. In Windows 8.1 you have to install the IIS Remote Admin plugin from the WPI to get the "Connect To a Site..." connection wizard which then allows you to connect t a remote IIS. When you
try to install that plugin however you get the error detailed above by Luis.
As such, I am now high and dry for doing the remote admin on all my DISCOUNTASP.NET hosted solutions.

Would it be easier to log a support ticket with your hosting provider?

In order to install the remote admin addin in IIS8.5 on Windows 8.1 you need to download the msi file by clicking on the "Direct Download Link" link in the Web Platform Installer 4.6. Once the file is on your local box "inetmgr_amd64_v1.1_en-US.msi" you
need to go the context menu and set the compatibility to a previous version of window and then install it and everything will work as under Windows 7 and 8.
