I'm running XP SP3, IIS 5.1 Somehow, on two separate computers, I've lost access to localhost (127.0.0.1). I had been developing some PHP programs using Apache a few weeks ago and everything was fine, when I went back to them a couple of days ago they wouldn't
execute. Whether it's Apache or IIS running it's the same problem. The browser (IE, Chrome, or FireFox) cannot connect to the localhost. I've tried both LOCALHOST and http://127.0.0.1. I was getting an Authentication Request from Chrome: "The server localhost:80
requires a username and password". But now I just get the "Cannot Connect to the localhost" type of responses from the browsers. I didn't intentionally setup any security for localhost - I don't even know how, but evidently it's there now. The only changes
that have been made recently on both PC's are Microsoft and Norton Security updates. I don't see how either of those have anything to do with my problem. I did something, but have no clue as to what. Is there any way to clear this, without reinstalling XP?
thanks David Morris
It sounds like anonymous access has been disabled. Go to the site properties click on Directory Security. Click on Authentication and access control. Ensure that "Enable anonymous access" is checked. If it is then confirm that the user name specified has permissions
on the folder being used for the root of the site.
This is XP, there is nothing specifically called Directory Security; or authentication or access control. so I tried this: Using explorer I right clicked on the directory that was being used as the localhost: htdocs. clicked on properties which brought up the
HTDOCS Properties box clicked the Security tab and went through and gave each group and user full control. It didn't help I still can't access the localhost. Also, in Control Panel I opened up the Administrative Tools icon, opened up the Services icon, right
clicked on IIS Admin and clicked properties which gave me the IIS Admin Properties Box. clicked on the Logon tab and found "Log on as:" was set to "Local System account". Which I believe is normal. I'm wondering. Is it possible to designate a different directory
as "localhost". I know the one I'm having the trouble with, "c:\xampp\htdocs" isn't what I was using last time I tried playing with web development. thanks.
