Today I was trying to set up my dev server to allow our team to use the Web Deployment feature in Visual Studio 2010. I installed the Web Deployment Tool via the Web Platform Installer, following Scott Guthrie's recent blog post: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2010/09/13/automating-deployment-with-microsoft-web-deploy.aspx

I haven't been able to find much information about this error, but I did try adding Windows Authentication to IIS as outlined in this post: http://blogs.iis.net/brian-murphy-booth/archive/2008/06/03/visual-studio-2008-unable-to-debug-asp-net-app-on-iis-7-0.aspx
I also tried changing the app pool for the new site I was creating to the Default App Pool, but this resulted in the same error.

I've seen this error in a former case that the IIS site was assigned with a invalid application pool. Please check the site's apppool setting and make it to use a default pool (like: ASP.net 4.0) or create a new pool for it. Then please test if the problem
