    IIS 5.0 server becomes unresponsive...

I have an IIS 5.0 Server running on a machine and every couple of hours or so the server becomes unresponsive to users if it becomes idle. If I try to access a web site on the server I get the error message "Cannot find server or DNS Error". To get around the problem I have to go to Windows Firewall / Advanced tab / double-click on the wireless connection / and then uncheck and re-check the Web Server (HTTP) option. I have to do this every couple of hours it seems. There is a firewall turned on in my wireless router and configured to point to my machine (192.168.0.100) for web requests (port 80). The machine (192.168.0.100) is running Windows XP Pro SP3 and is hosting IIS 5.0 server. This machine also has Windows Firewall. Does anyone know what might be the cause?

This isn't an IIS error, it's a networking error.  Most likely is your wireless connection going idle, but it's hard to say without a lot of checking hardware, software and network stats.

How do I check if it's my wireless connection going idle? My browser hits other sites, like google, yahoo, etc.  It's just when I attempt to hit my web site being hosted in the same machine that it says it can't find.

Are you using the external or internal IP adderess when you "hit" the server from itself?  If your IIS is set to respond on all IP's you can use "Localhost" or 127.0.0.1, otherwise use the IP IIS is set to.  If it's still slow, disable the wireless connection and see if it still slows down.

If this is still slow from the same server, using the IP address, then it's not networking and you'll need to look elsewhere.  You posted this under Migration, is it IIS 5 or 6 that you;'re experiencing this on?

I am hitting the server via its external domain name.  When I use localhost instead everything works.  But it's when using the normal external address that I get the error after the computer has been idle for sometime.  I have to reset the Web Server (HTTP) checkbox in the Windows Firewall Advanced tab and then the site becomes active again.  This is in IIS 5.0 under Windows XP Professional SP3.

Did you check the System Standby and Hibernate settings in ControlPanel --> Poweroptions?

     It should be NEVER.

Re: IIS 5.0 server becomes unresponsive...

This was exactly it.  The web server was becoming unresponsive because my power management options allowed the system to hibernate after a time. Once the laptop went into standby, I would have to reset the Web Server (HTTP) option in the Network Connection Settings through the Windows Firewall settings screen.  Once I set the laptop to not hibernate/standy this fixed the problem.  Thanks for all your help!!
