Help needed Configuring IIS to publish website on the net

    Hi,

I need help from a patient IT person out there in solving this problem. I have had a home server machine for over a year now, and have been trying to get it online so I can use it, along with other members of my dev team for testing purposes. Problem is I have still not been able to successfully get the machine online, as in broadcast the application over the internet via IIS. Since the site is built using .NET technology, I am unable to use APACHE server which seems to be more straightforward. The machine currently runs Windows Server 2003. I already have a Website folder created and all and the machine is online. I just need to be able to view my site from a remote location by maybe typing the computer address or a domain name to view it and possible test it. How can I do this please?  Thanks in advance!

Re: Help needed Configuring IIS to publish website on the net

IIS pretty much just works and if you can view the site locally from the server or your home LAN then this is not a configuration issue with IIS.

Possible reasons why you can't view it from over the net ...

    1)  Windows (or other 3rd-party) firewall is running on the server and is blocking port 80.

    2)  If you have a home network/LAN your home router is not configured properly for forwarding port 80 requests to the web server.

    3)  Your consumer/residential grade ISP blocks inbound port 80 as this violates your Terms of Service for running a server (very common).

    4)  You don't know the public IP address assigned by your ISP.

    5)  You don't have a domain name registered and/or it's not pointing properly to your public IP address.

    6)  You don't have a static IP (usually given with commercial ISP accounts) and you have a dynamic DHCP public IP address (common for residential ISP accounts).  In this case you need something like a dyndns account to link your dynamic IP to a domain name.

FWIW ... you would have all of these same potential issues with Apache ...

Thanks Tom, for the prompt response to by post. Now, I have heard considered some of the above as possible reasons, but still have no clue how I get around these problems to get my site broadcasting online. Can you please elaborate how I deal with the situation in each case?

Uumm… I just have ComCast High Speed Internet. Is there a special kind of internet developers who host their own test sites need to sign up for instead?
