I created a new application pool for use with several applications that use asp.net 2.0, but something magically reset it to the "DefaultAppPool"...none of the other people who have access to the IIS admin are fessing up to changing anything. So now Im
left wondering, is there any condition that would cause the application to be pointed to the default app pool ?

oOoo.. interesting. I'm traveling now, don't have access to my test box. Specific in step2, after you apply changes, do you immediately restart IIS in step3 or close IIS Manager, recycle the service, open the IIS Manager and it was gone?
Per my understanding, changes are written right away to config file. However, if app can't ride on the new app pool during the process, it may revert to the first app pool, in default setup box - defaultapppool. Question is how to make it not able to fire
up the new w3wp.exe in the new app pool?

Mm... got it! know what you meant. but not sure how to reproduce in my env. I got only few apps sharing the same pool and machine is super fast!! Will have to introduce lot of load before i can try this.
Anyway, I think the changes to newAppPool is written, just that during this process, when it reverted, the config file got written again - this time with the DefaultAppPool. Not sure why though....
but back to the OP question. if the changes already succesfully made and app is running on new app pool, IIS itself will not revert anything, the symptom you mentioned I think I might seen before only during the initial assignment time for the app to sit
on the new app pool.
