    IIS hang during installation

I am trying to install IIS on my WinXP Pro and it keeps hanging about 75% of the way thru. No error message, just stops moving the progress bar and there is no disk activity. I let it sit there for about 3 or 4 hours but finally just had to use task manager to crash the process.

I checked my disks for errors and they are fine. There is plenty of free space available on them. Did a virus scan it came up clean. Did a spyware scan it came up clean also.

I used to have IIS installed about a year ago but took it off. About 6 mo. ago I put MS Visual Studio 2005 and .NET 2.0 on it and now I want to develop some web apps. So I went to re-install IIS and I'm having this problem.

I'm not having any other problems with my system at the moment.

Hang ? Mmm.. anything in event log? do a search fail entry in %windir%/iis6.log, and post it here.

    Thankyou for replying.

When I try to install the log does not contain the word fail anywhere except line 1. Here is the very end of the install log:

The un-install procedure appears to work ok. I mean it removes IIS from my system as far as I can see although it sits there for about 3 minutes "Configuring IIS" before it rips thru the rest of the uninstall process. Notably, when installing, the Status box in the installer window also says "Configuring IIS" when it hangs. When I un-install, the log does contain the word fail. Here is the relevant section of the un-install log (in case it matters):

LOL " Service must be in a hung mode.  Let's kill it." Nice!

So does the remove of IIS complete? if not try uninstall again... then
    a) uninstall IIS (safe or normal mode)
    b) Remove files and folders
    %windir%/system32/inetsvr/
    /inetpub/
    %windir%/iisx.log (x=5 for w2k, 6 for XP, Win03)
    (use safe mode to delete)
    c) reboot, reinstall IIS, repatch machines

And during c) reinstallation of IIS, does it hang again?
    anything in event log?

    Cheers,

    Re: IIS hang during installation

    Ok here's what I did...

Deleted the C:\inetpub folder and all its contents.
Deleted the C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv folder and all its contents.
Deleted the C:\Windows\iis6.log file. (I got WinXP Pro)

In the past I have not tried deleting those folders first, this time I did. Then I tried to install. Same thing, it hangs while "Installing IIS". So I end the process using task manager. Then I rename iis6.log so I don't lose that and run the un-install. It generates a new log. The un-install does finish, eventually, and it says "successfully". C:\inetpub folders still exists (no surprise), C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv still exists, but there is nothing significant in there -- just a sample.mdb and a iisdocs.html under iisadmin. Other than that I see no trace of it on my system. But I didn't go searching the registry or anything like that looking for traces of it.

The install log has no "FAIL" in it anywhere. However, by first deleting those folders this time the results were slightly different...

And the un-install log looks the same as I posted earlier.

By the way, for the un-install process I am using control panel's add/remove windows components interface. Even though the install process fails to complete, when I go into control panel it shows up there as being installed and I am able to deselect the IIS check boxes to un-install the thing.

Can you send entire Log file to my email - ganeshanekar@rediffmail.com ?

Also Do you have any personal Firewall installed on this box?

Can you try uninstall IIS - Then - Register msxml3.dll and then install IIS again?

Actually, I am not clear on what do you mean by installation does not complete - Does it show any error message? or somthing?

Also in Services check Distributed Transaction Co-ordinator service is up and running.

HTH. Send me log file and we will take it from there.

    Re: IIS hang during installation

    Thanks again for the help.

I sent you two logs: __iis6_install.log is the one that gets created when I install, __iis6_uninstall.log is the one that gets created when I uninstall.

I have Norton Internet Security installed however disabling it has no effect on the problem -- that's one of the first things I tried.

What I mean by installation does not complete is this...
I run the installer. Installer gets thru the "Examining Installed Files" and "Copying Files" phases and the progress bar gets up to about 80% done. Then the Installer Status line changes to say "Installing IIS", the disk grinds away for about 1-2 minutes more then the disk activity becomes very intermittent. It ticks an ocassional disk access every now and then (maybe every 30 sec.-2 min). Eventually it stops completely (after about 6 min.more) and the progress bar goes no further. The mouse cursor occasionally flips between Pointer Cursor and Busy Cursor until the disk activity totally ceases. It takes maybe 10 minutes or so to get this far. Then it just sits there like that for 4 hours (that's the longest I've ever waited for it). No disk activity at all, the mouse cursor stays on Default Cursor, and the progress bar goes nowhere. There is no error message that appears it just sits there hung like that (presumably forever). I have been giving it about 20 minutes or so to proceed or make some disk activity happen and then I end the task since it isn't doing anything more (the cancel button in the Installer is greyed out, disabled, at the point this hang occurs so I must use Task Manager to end it).

I tried installing it in safe mode once but some of the required services won't start in safe mode so that didn't work because I got a bunch of errors about services not being able to start in safe mode or not already running. But the install process did fully complete in safe mode. Afterwards, when I rebooted in normal mode, I went to go configure IIS in the MyComputer-Manage-Services interface but the IIS Admin screen would not appear (again a hang with Busy Cursor and I had to kill the process). Plus most of my startup programs from the taskbar tray like NVidia control panel, keyboard config, sound config, power management, quick time tray, etc. would not appear on reboot until I uninstalled IIS.

Distributed Transaction Coordinator Service shows "Started" and "Manual".

The install logs I just sent you were made using the same procedure I described in my last post except I first found C:\Windows\System32\msxml3.dll right-clicked it, chose unregister, it succeeded, then right-click it again and chose register, it succeeded. Then I went for the install-hang-uninstall and came up with those logs. Both Norton and WinXP firewalls were disabled when I did this. I have no other software running at the time either. I let it sit at the "hang spot" for 1 hour this time when creating those logs.

Zzz.. no error during installation, without clues it will be hard. If you don't mind, can you completely uninstall norton internet security and retest :)

Also, there's nothing in event log?

    Re: IIS hang during installation

Yuck. I'd rather not uninstall that thing, it takes so damn long to set it all back up right. Maybe this weekend I can take a day to mess with that end.

I thought the iis6.log file was the event log. I guess I'm not familiar with the event log thing you're talking about. Is that a windows tool?

    Re: IIS hang during installation

I believe I found the event viewer you were referring to. Looks like there are 3 categories: Application, Security, and System. When I run IIS Install I get one information event in the application category -- no error events. It says:

    Source is LoadPerf:
"Performance counters for the inetinfo (inetinfo) service were loaded successfully. The Record Data contains the new index values assigned to this service."

Security event section is totally empty.

System event section has the following (in increasing time-order from when I start install):

    Source is DCOM:
(ERROR) "The server {F3A614DC-ABE0-11D2-A441-00C04F795683} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."
    Source is Service Control Manager:
(Info) "The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service was successfully sent a start control."
(Info) "The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service entered the running state."
(Info) "The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service entered the stopped state."
(Info) "The IIS Admin service was successfully sent a start control."
(Info) "The IIS Admin service entered the running state."
(Info) "The IIS Admin service was successfully sent a stop control."
(Info) "The IIS Admin service entered the stopped state."
(Info) "The IIS Admin service was successfully sent a start control."
(Info) "The IIS Admin service entered the running state."
(Info) "The COM+ System Application service was successfully sent a start control."
(Info) "The COM+ System Application service entered the running state."
(Info) "The Distributed Transaction Coordinator service was successfully sent a start control."
(Info) "The Distributed Transaction Coordinator service entered the running state."
(Info) "The World Wide Web Publishing service was successfully sent a start control."

The first error event might have been there before I started the install, looking at the timestamps it was close. I found this in the registry:
    F3A614DC-ABE0-11D2-A441-00C04F795683 => Messenger.MsgrObject.1
I have Windows Messenger Service turned off.

I don't know much about this stuff but to me it looks like the WWW server just isn't starting up. No running state entered event for it ever pops up.

Yeah, you have got it right. That's the event log we referring. Looks normal :)
I wonder if it's COM+ catalog issue, can you expand it ?
    - administrative tools - component services
    - expand the component services node - navigate to computers - my computer - com+ applications

any error during the above action?

    Re: IIS hang during installation

Wow that thing looks just as messy as the registry just with more colors...

Yup I can expand everything in there fully with no errors.

Same problem.  Installation of IIS hangs about 80% through the process.

Uninstalling seems to be successfull and reinstallation hangs everytime.
