1. No, the advertisements cannot be skipped.

2. The advertisements are local.

We also want to log the statistics & authenticate the users.

How can one decide which platform to choose for their requirement. Anything published regarding this?

WMS Playlist Vs IIS7 Web Playlists

We are using WMS serverside playlist in our application - I just found IIS7 Web Playlists CTP2, I'm trying to understand the difference between these two.

Our requirement is to add advertisements like TV commercials to a main video. I appreciate any inputs on this, mainly the correct platform to use - should it be wms server side playlist or IIS7 web playlist & authentication.

Web playlist provider error - 404 error generated even when a file is found

Every time a song is played through the web playlist provider a 404 error is generated and a fault log is written. This happens even when a file is successfully getting returned to a user.

The error in the fault xml file is "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

The files are coming from a share on another computer. This is the path that is showing up in the fault:

\\?\UNC\WLGSQL01\music$\Ween\-Shinola- Vol. 1\03 - I Fell In Love Today.wma

The error itself seems to be thrown from GetFileInfo:

How do I fix this? It is making tracking down actual errors very hard.

Let me answer the question #3.) that you mentioned above first

Playlist is an XML file and therefore it can be scripted. I mean any script can emit out XML code can create a playlist file.

Management of playlist is also scriptable since it is just a file. Additionally, creating playlists can be delegated as well. Playlists can be created at any level in site heriarchy.

For your question 1.). You can always use WSRM(Windows System Resource Manager) to contain CPU/ Memory for each worker process if you are worried about the WP running away with resources. WSRM is availble with Windows Server 2003 and 2008 as a optional feature. WSRM with WS2008 also ships and Out of the box policy for Equal CPU per app pool that can be used if you don't need more fine grained management.
