Speeding Up Response

Hi all,

This is my first post and i've tried searching for it but the search functionality just doesn't seem to work. =\

So here it is:

I've been reading up on IIS7 running ASP.NET apps for good reason. Reasons are to increase reliability as well as performance. The particular ASP application we're running is DotNetNuke, i'm not sure if IIS7 should be configured uniquely to handle it but so far we've been running DNN on:

its own application pool which sports the following configuration

Integrated pipeline mode
Default of a 1000 queue length
Default Idle Time-out of 20
One (1) Worker Process
Recycling at Regular Time Interval 29hrs
Recycling at Specific Times 0300hrs

Currently I'm pushing for us to allocate time to view the logs created by IIS on traffic so that we can pull figures out from the charts created which could help us with

Keeping these DNN sites alive so they don't have to recompile on request after there's been a long period of inactivity (Time-out)
Increasing the response speed of the site. Our monitoring tools recorded three (3) performance violations in an hour. It was to pick out response times of more than three (3) seconds. This knowledge coupled with the IIS Stats could give us a business reason to drive more visitors in.

I've read that increasing Worker Processes would assist in response time and have read a few testimonials that showed evidence of it obtaining remarkable results and so have increased Worker Processes to 2 for trials.

In the meantime, I've read that InProc session states would not be maintained as each W3WP has it's own boundaries and does not share sessions. Will using ASP.NET's ViewState be affected in any way? In the future, another application that will be deployed, will use simple Sessions. Will that break?

I was hoping to obtain a cleaner site, closer to opening times, so was hoping to recycle at about 7am instead of 3am. Would that help stability at all?

In DNN, there is a KeepAlive.aspx file which refreshes every now and then. The aim was to connect to that page and let it refresh to keep the site alive. It has worked in keeping the site alive and the payload returned is extremely small, which is a plus! Couple this with traffic stats from IIS and we should have an answer as to how long to adjust keep-alive.

Are there any side-effects of increasing keep-alive? I'm guessing that keeping the connection alive for too long would reduce the availability of connections to new visitors?

How should we go about increasing stability and performance?

Trying to install DotNetNuke

Trying to install DotNetNuke Community edition via WPI. Running Vista, IIS7. WPI says:

.NET Extensibility, ISAPI Filters, and ASP.NET dependencies did not install correctly.

The first Error in the WPI log file is:

The first FAIL in the iis7 log file is:

Is this enough info to tell me what's going on and how to fix it?

Missing Service tab in 6.0

I'm trying to create application pools and know I need to be in worker isolation mode which can be selected in the Service tab. But I have no Service tab available, even though I'm right clicking on the "Web Site" tab/Properties (not individual sites). I'm also using XP Home. The only tabs showing are Directory Securtiy, HTTP Headers, Custom Errors, ASP.NET, ISAPI Filters, Home Directory and Documents.

Desparate for an answer as I'm trying to install DotNetNuke. Did I install IIS wrong to begin with?

I just installed wpilauncher for the first time. After going through the tedious task of providing user names and passwords for a platoons worth of people it informed me that the product had been previously installed. I found this a novel means of getting software is installed. This Hard Drive has only been installed for about 4 day, and this was my first installation of any of the MSDN offerings. Could you use this new technology to install Windows 7 for me.

web.config inheritance screwing up my outlook web access

I have a 2008 (x64) server with exchange 2007 installed. This server also servers a dotnetnuke website. the problem is that now that the default website serves the dotnetnuke, the virtual directories / applications for exchange no longer work because they are picking up the dotnetnuke web.config settings because it is the root site. is there a way to totally block this web.config inheritance or another work around that doesn't involve changing ports?

How to install/manage multiple CMS's using same wwwroot folder

Hi Everyone

Downloaded Web Platform installer and managed to get Umbraco up and running by floke, my tech info is limited. However, I am also interested in trying out other applications, and having problems with databases creation for these different applications. I am assuming may have to do with database location or name or parent/child web.config files or another reason. I also observed that they were listed under wwwroot folder and in between where Umbraco is running. Your responses will be highly appreciated. Thanks

n.b. the other applications are Dotnetnuke (This product did not install successfully; the database 'dotnetnuke' could not be created), Wordpress (downloaded file failed signature verification and may have been tampered with) and nopCommerce.(success, but web application error at localhost)

dotnetnuke database creation fails

Installs great, but cannot create a database. I'm using Web Platform Installer that pops up after clicking "Install application from gallery..". I'm not sure what else to add, except it "fails to create the database". Windows 7: Build 7100 2.93ghz Intel Celeron 2gb ram IIS 7

I have a Vista Ultimate 64 with Visual Studio Professional running on an Intel Quad processor.

I have installed web components with web platform installer. The following components did not install properly:

subtext, umbraco, url rewrite 1.1, application request routing 2.0 beta, dotnetnuke, mojoportal, wordpress, silverstripe cms, silverlight3 tools for visual studio, sql server 2008 management studio express,

Subtext, umbraco, dotnetduke, mojoportal: for these the database could not be created. The programs are not able to create the databases although I do actually have sql server 2005 which came with my Visual Studio professional installed

Url rewrite: message was close WAS and WMSvc to install module 1.1 for IIS 7

Appl Req routing: A product on which it depends did not install

Wordpress: Object package ....../wordpress-2.7.1-IIS-RC1.zip could not be created

silverstripe CMS: Object package ....../silverstripe-2.3.1-webpi.zip could not be created

silverlight3 tools for visual studio did not install succesfully

sql server 2008 management studio express, did not install successfully. I do see the programs in the program and features though.

The programs are not able to create the databases but I do actually have sql server 2005 which came with my Visual Studio professional installed

The following were succesfully installed:

blogengine.net, screwturn, dasblog, 20 platform products

Could you maybe tell me what could be the problem with the above.

I have exactly the same issue with a Win7 computer. I used msdeploy command line tool on the file downloaded by Web Platform Installer and the error message is then "Not a valid Win32 FileTime".

A solution that works for me is to change the Time Zone from UTC+1 to UTC-8. I'm now able to also download Umbraco :-)
