Things that I am doing that are the same:

1) High volume web servers running Windows 2008 and/or Windows 2008 R2 running sites in Integrated mode.

2) Sites have virtual directories that point to UNC content on Windows 2003 server. Also have Terabytes of data (about 30 TB) on that UNC location.

3) Active Directory domain account used for permissions to access shared content.

Differences:

1) From the errors I see in your it looks like you're using directory monitoring (File Change Notification) and I'm using the default mode which check the content periodically to see if it has been updated.

I had similar problems and did have to tune LanManServer registry settings on the file server. Since my File Server is x64 Window 2003 I used large values to MaxMpxCT (16384) and MaxWorkItems (65536).

On My IIS Servers (Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2) I've got LanManWorkstation "MaxCmds" set to 16384.

Now that tuning did *largely* solve my issues.

However, under high load I get occasional times when the IIS Servers stop serving content from the Virtual Directories attached the the UNC content. "appcmd list requests" show a lot of requests in the "BeginRequest" or "AuthenticateRequest" state. Often times it take about 80 seconds for things to start moving again.

So my advice, trying the LanManServer and LanManWorkstation registry setting and see how it work for you.

*****UPDATE***** I've had great success with:

Windows 2008 R2 (i've got serveral): lanmanworkstation\MaxCmds = 8192

Windows 2003 File Server (All values decimal):

lanmanserver\EnableOplocks = 0
lanmanserver\MaxFreeConnections = 100
lanmanserver\MaxMpxCT = 8192
lanmanserver\MaxRawWorkItems = 512
lanmanserver\MaxWorkItems = 65536
lanmanserver\MinFreeConnections = 32

I've got two sites on the same IIS7 server and they both have a virtual directory called "photos" which points to the same UNC path and directory. Both sites serve content from the "photos" virtual directory just fine.

On "Site 1" I want to set the content to expire for the "photos" virtual directory to 20 minutes. When I do that a web.config file is generated in the physical location that maps to the "photos" virtual directory. Now both "Site 1" and "Site 2" have the same 20 minute expiration althugh my intent was NOT to have a 20 minute expiration for the "photos" virtual under "Site 2".

I want both sites to share the same virtual directory (and no, it's not practical to copy the files to different locations) and yet I want each site to have it's own unique content expiration time. On the surface it appears that this can't be done.

Any way around this issue?

Thanks,

If you select the virtual directory in the tree view, then click Basic Settings on the Actions frame, and then select Test Settings button, the Test Connection form will report that the specified users credentials are Valid.

Also, I am able to browse to content on the virtual directory using IE8 (such as http://localhost/(virtual-directory)/xxx.htm , so the redirect to the virtual directory on the NAS is being served properly.

For background, the IIS7 boxes are all in a local work group accessing the NAS directory via a secured local account. The account security credentials used to access the share are the same on the IIS7 box and the NAS. The virtual directory is a under the Default Web Site.

Lastly, The Edit Permissions actions on the default directory is not working correctly on the 2 servers out of 6 in this test bed that have this error. Instead of bringing up a properties dialogue for "Directory(\\IPaddress)" it loads properties for "System32"

I have also reviewed IIS post (http://forums.iis.net/t/1157234.aspx), but I am at a loss to see the difference between the two sets of servers regarding users, virtual directory or App Pool configuration.

Thanks for any input,

A default installation will be installed with a virtual directory called secure that points to the root of the site. (Both the root and /secure are pointing to the same physical location).

The cms system also handles sub-sites (www.foo.com/subsite), that also uses virtual directories to point the /subsite virtual folder to the root.

Problem is that I'm running in to all sorts of problems with the web config, and right now I'm at a loss on how to solve this issue. I can get the defualt website up, but then I cannot access /secure and vice versa.

(The CMS is our own system and I can modify the code to some extent, but to rewrite the entire site handling is quite a big task)

Anyone who have experience with this, or has any helpful suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Regards Niklas

Assigning an AppPool to a Virtual Directory?

<cs:applicationKey>iis7_-_general--1</cs:applicationKey>

I trust there is a way to do this that I am missing?

Any help would be much appreciated
