Migrating from Windows Media Services to IIS Smooth Streaming

Hi I would like to know if there is any documentation about migrating media delivery from Windows Media Services (WMS) to IIS Smooth streaming? Today I serve my content using WMS. My content is usually just one bitrate wmv file in Windows Media 9 format (video and audio) in an asf container. I also have another version of my content for mobile devices such as the iPhone. This is a lower resolution version of the same file encoded using AVC1(h264)/ACC in an mp4 container. My question are: Do I need to re-encode my content for smooth streaming or can I somehow generate the Manifest files according to the already existing keyframes in my media files? Also, would it be possible to offer two bitrates in different formats? The idea is to use the lower resolution (and lower bitrate) format (iPhone version) together with the higher bitrate version of the video. Clients seeking around or experiencing bandwith problems could therefore start by playing the lower bitrate and then switch to the higher bitrate version. Furthermore, could I "smooth stream" the lower bitrate version directly to the iPhone as well (as shown (or almost shown..) in ScottGu's keynote at PDC09)?

ARR and smooth streaming

Hi there, I had configured a small ARR implementation with the following configuration: 1 ARR and 2 webservers doing round robin balancing.

Everything worked well (check it at http://190.210.77.135/wordpress) but when I tried to use ARR in order to load balancing and caching a smooth streaming video the ARR server is sending a 404 error (page not found) when trying to access to the smooth streaming services url

This actually makes sense as SSME initializes logging only if required.

You should use the AutoPlay property on SSME and set it to true if you want to be able to start playback on setting SmoothStreamingSource without calling Play.

Setting the LoggingUrl should work. If the URL for your content and logging server are on different domains, you would need to make sure your ClientAccessPolicy.xml or CrossDomain.xml is set properly to allow that. SIlverlight will not allow it unless it is enabled via these files.

LogReady event is not hooked up SSME yet for SmoothStreaming. However, I believe it would work for WMV files. I can cross-check but you can also try and see if it works. If not, please let me know.

In future we are planning to giving all SS logging information through LogReady or similar APIs as well.

Smooth Streaming Media Element Stop method not working

I tried calling the stop and I checked the current state of the player right after calling the stop. but current state doesnt changed to stop even after few seconds after calling stop

another question is...while streaming is hapening how can I close it or end it?

Video streaming is not smooth

Video is always streaming in low bit rate and playing video is not smooth but videos play from smoothHD.com and IIS7 Big buck bunny are smooth and playing in High bit rate.

I am converting my videos in following bit rates 300,424,600,849,1200 kbps using expression encoder 3 in VC-1/WMA profile.

Please any one guide me on this issue to solve whether I have to change any setting Expression Encoder 3 while converting video or in IIS7

My Server is located in Remote place and configuration is windows 2008 server / Xeon processors(6 core) / 8 GB RAM

Thanks Anilr, you were correct.

I would advise people not to have Plesk installed on the server unless you want lots of problems.

There are also these things you need to do if you want to get Smooth Streaming working with Plesk installed on the server:

Plesk generated web sites don't inherit the servers default Handler Mappings.
You need to manually add the Hander Mappings to each web site.

i.e. for the SmoothHandler do the following:
In the IIS manager, click the site in question, double click on Handler Mappings, under Actions click on Add Module Mapping. Set the following:
Request Path=*.ism
Module=SmoothHandler
Executable=(left blank)
Name=SmoothHandler
Under Request Restrictions place a check in Invoke handler only if request is mapped to: file.

You'll also need to add the LiveStreamingHandler, PlaylistHandler & WedDAVHandler if you want those services to work. You should be able to copy the correct settings from the servers "default" web site as they will already be installed there correctly.

Hi helenw,

There is a property called SmoothStreamingSource. You can use that to set the source to Smooth Streaming Content. TotalBytesDownlaoded should have a valid value when you set a smooth streaming source. We will hook up this for progressively downloaded content in some future version in some way.

H.264 support in SSME is not there yet. For now, we would suggest using VC1 - CBR or VBR should work.

H.264 support in SSME is coming soon.

Hi, I've been having a bit of trouble getting the media player working with some smooth streaming videos hosted on our IIS server running Media Services 3 - the bottom line is that I get this error when I try to play the media:

Caught exception trying to parse initial manifest / initialize buffering engine: Manifest has a missing or empty 'Url' attribute on an <StreamIndex> node

The media was published using Expression Encoder 3 and the published player plays the media fine.

The simplest test was to modify the default.html file that comes with the player SDK to point it to the relevant file.ism/Manifest. This didn't work and gave the above error - I've even made sure that as much as possible the parameters in the SDK file match the published Encoder 3 player parameters, e.g. frameRate, width and height, to no effect.

I've even tried using the SmoothStreamingMediaElement directly in a custom built app by simply setting the SmoothStreamingSource and calling Play, but the same error occurs.

The error would seem to indicate a problem with the manifest file, specifically a StreamIndex node. I've had a look at the file, and there are indeed StreamIndex entries that don't have a Url node, but they are of type "text" and define chapters and commands. Removing these nodes doesn't get things working, so I don't think they are anything to do with the problem anyway.

Any suggestions?

Edit: it has occurred to me that this may not be the most appropriate place for this post - I only put it here because it was my immediate feedback for the SDK - please feel free to move it elsewhere if needed.
