This started out pretty small 2 servers, less than 10% cpu, and just 1 site. Over time, we've migrated more and more apps to this newer farm from our IIS6 installation. As it stands now, there are 6 servers, averaging around 60% cpu, and around 20 business apps.

We've been extremely happy with both IIS7.5 and shared config. A lot more consistency across the farm, and lower provisioning time. One thing I've started to notice is configuration changes now take significantly longer (up to 1 minute) whereas before they were almost instantaneous. This includes anything from creating a new site, to a new WP, to modifying authentication settings on a site. It's not really a problem, its still infinitely faster and better than making individual changes on all nodes. It's more my curiosity. Pretty much all of my variables changed at the same time, so I really don't know whether its the # of apps, # of servers, or cpu load thats slowed this down.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

offline files 2008 r2 - sync center only appears for person that setup offline files

<cs:applicationKey>iis7_-_web_farms-41</cs:applicationKey>

We've recently configured offline file support for our shared config repository, following the guide posted at http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/212/offline-files-for-shared-configuration/

On the 4 server farm, i setup two servers and another engineer setup the other two. We just recently noticed that I can't see sync center in the tray, and the share location doesn't have the Available Offline check next to it on the servers the other engineer built. The reverse is true for him, he doesn't see sync center in the tray or the offline check on the servers I built.

It seems like sync center is per user. If so, is it even working for the service accounts that the shares are being mapped to?

Do we need to login as the UNC mapping service account to configure offline files?

Does this require port 445, file sharing port opened to permit the WFE to reach the files in this other location?

I am hoping not due to security issues around 445/file sharing.

Rewrite module disappears when Shared Configuration is enabled.

<cs:applicationKey>iis7_-_url_rewrite_module-41</cs:applicationKey>

Hello..

I'm hosting our sites on a small web farm and use the Shared Configuration feature to sych up IIS. We have a hardware load balancer where an SSL certificate is installed. We have an issue where the default 302 redirect functionality is redirecting to http (instead of https) if the url does not end in a slash. For example:

https://www.thedomain.com/Demo1 is getting redirected to http://www.thedomain.com/demo1/

I can solve this issue using the URL Rewrite Module but I cannot get it installed and have shared hosting enabled at the same time. I disabled shared hosting to install the module, and I've installed it on all the web servers. But as soon as I re-enable shared hosting the module disappears from IIS. Additionally, any site that has had a rule written for it (written while shared config was disabled) now throws a 505.19 Internal Server Error saying it doesn't recognize the elements that were added to the web config.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Shared configuration and offline files

<cs:applicationKey>iis7_-_configuration__scripting-41</cs:applicationKey>

I enabled shared configuration for 2 Windows Server 2008 64 bit machines. That appears to work OK.

I then tried to implement offline files to prevent a loss of service whn the common share goes off line. I did make the registry change to make the cache read-only and I loaded the desktop experience...the offline files appear to be operational.

However, when I try to restart the server I get Event ID 9000 (The Application Host Helper Service encountered an error while reading the data for SID mapping. Please ensure that the application pool name data is correct in the configuration file.) and the W3SVC does not start.

I can manually start the W3SVC and everything works OK.

When I remove the configuration share from the offline files, everything starts working again.

It was imported from a UNC location. The server was moved to production and now won't start because it cannot access the UNC that doesn't exist in production.

How can I reset the shared configuration in this situation?

Neither IIS admin nor WWW pub services will start, so I can't restore a backup using appcmd.exe.

Changing redirection.config under system32/inetsvc/config allowed both services to start, but the admin snap-in won't function (error msg that it cannot access the same UNC path).

*************************

Opinion: this feature is half-baked and plain dangerous.

If you have a web farm configured from a single source file and that file becomes unvailable your servers will die one by one as they try to read the remote config file.
Sorry, it's taken so long to follow up on this. Were you able to sort out what the problems were?

In my testing, I use shared configuration and it's been working pretty well. As you had indicated, it is such a time saver since you only need to make the changes once. Also, adding additional web servers is a simple 3 step process:

Provision the new web server.

Configure the server to use the shared config.

Add the new server to the server group in ARR.

Let me know if you are still experiencing problems.
