  I read in another post here that SQl Server 2005 must be removed first, so I removed that and also deleted the Registry entry.  This completed the installation.  (would be nice if the installer checks things like that wouldm't it?)   Anyway, thanks so much to all who contributed to this thread....

  I am getting the same issue.  It appears that SQL Server express can only be installed now with the Web Installer. I tried to use system restore to go back before this was done but it still does the same thing - reboot required.  At this point I do not care if SQL Server Express installs.  I just want to get the reboot required to ...
