Hello everyone. After struggling with a lot of failed installation attempts of SQL Server Express I thought I'd just post what my problem was here in case it might help someone else. In my case it was quite a simple solution, but took me a long time to figure out. But basically, don't use " in the SA password, it confuses the command line parser for the installer. When I used a different password without the " everything installed fine. And I have visual studio 2008 installed, didn't need to uninstall it first.

Mine fails too. The relevant portion of the log (thank you for the nice links to the logs) states:

I also tried freshly downloading the 82.3 MB file from http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/E/5/8E53FAA8-1129-4621-903F-3F8DB6D066AC/SQLEXPR32_x86_ENU.exe and running it manually with no arguments. After extracting many files to a randomly named directory like c:\77b9176f050016f8181c49576b36a61a it fails with a popup window, "Extraction Failed: File is corrupt"

Same thing when I run it with the arguments the installer is using but without /Q and /hideconsole. Can I download an older version anywhere or anything like that?

Good news. There is light at the end of the very long dark tunnel.

My story started due to me becoming unemployed and having nothing better to do than download free software and teach myself VB. The problems started when I ventured into SQL 2008. Sql 2005 downloaded and installed wihout any issues then I tried to upgrade to SQL 2008 Express which involved the WPI. The WPI loaded and did nothing even when left overnight, even I get bored watching a progress bar circleing around. As others have done I uninstalled re-installed altered the registers with regedit for a couple of weeks, I have nothing better to do apart from looking for a job.

Along the journey I had noticed that my computer had been set up using corporate Norton Anti Virus and that the firewall was not windows but set by group policy. I disabled Norton which made no difference. After a few more days and a few more attempts I decided to uninstall Norton. Wow then going to the download centre I downloaded and installed SQL 2008 Express without a problem. I then tried the WPI.

It still does not seem to work but there again I never wanted the web installer and everything I initaly set out to do is working so everyone will understand my reluctance to delve any deeper because I could end up with another week or two of installing and un-installing.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed as little by little it has helped.

Based on the log file contents, you seem to be hitting 2 issues:

1. WebPI is throwing a "System.Exception: InternetOpenUrl failed" - when trying to access the fwlink - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=154876. On second retry, webpi seemed to have been successful in downloading the installer. Maybe a transient network issue?!

2. Powershell fails to install with a general return code 1603. We believe that this issue should be fixed by the fixes we published last evening.

Could you delete all the files under %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Platform Installer\ and re-launch webpi. This should prompt webpi to download the latest webpi xml file which should contain the fix for this issue.

Let us know if this does not fix the issue.

and then I took the quit or cancel option (after using the 'get help' option & coming here) and I was offered the option ... to install SQL Server Express edition ... so I took it.

The installation logs for webPi can be found in one of the following locations.

Vista / 2008 : %localappdata%\Microsoft\Web Platform Installer\logs\webpi

XP, W2K3: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Platform Installer\logs\webpi

Can you post the details from the most recent one after your installation attempt ?

Hi, I'm running into a similar issues. SQL Server 2008 Management Express failed to install, with the only error message in the log:

"DownloadManager Error: 0 : Install return code for product 'SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express' is Failure"

I previously had SQL Server 2005 installed, and I have uninstalled that and other dependencies as mentioned above. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have Visual Studio/Web Developer 2008 RTM already installed on your machine? If yes, could you uninstall that version and then try the install using WebPI?

That would explain why webpi fails to install Visual Web Developer 2008 SP1; SQL Express.

Gallery would fail to install because of dependency failures (SQL Express and VWD).
