I agree with your read on the logs. The log for the Installer 4.5 installation should be found in your %Temp% directory with a name something like MSI41579.LOG where the 5 digit number will be random.

You can also try installing it directly from the following location.

It seems that windows installer doesn't want to install, then of course SQL server express won't install. I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP2.
