Ahhh, thanks for the clarification. We have removed the perf counters, which we think will solve all of these issues. But until we can release the fix in Web PI, below should help you install IIS.

There are two places to find IIS components (which is why we started the Web PI project :) ).

1. Built-in IIS. You can go to Add/Remove programs. Then choose Turn on/off Windows Components. IIS will be one of those components. If you're installing on Windows XP or Windows 2k3, you will have a single option for IIS and then a few other components. If you're on Vista or Windows Server 2008, you will see that we have broken out the single IIS install into much smaller granularity to give you more control over what gets installed on your computer. 2. IIS Extensions. In addition to the functionality found above, the IIS team has been busy shipping what we call extensions. These are fully supported features that were built after we shipped the operating system, but are scenarios that we thought were important for customers that we shipped them as soon as we could. You can find these modules here: http://www.iis.net/extensions. Since you're having the perf counter problem, I recommend choosing either the x86 or x64 link beneath the Web PI button and you will go directly to the download page for just that component. Note: most of these are for IIS 7 (Vista or Windows Server 2008) but there are a couple of features even for XP or Windows Server 2003 (such as FastCGI for PHP and Web Deploy to help with migration).

Hi Phil_S,

You can find the IIS installers under the Web Platform tab on the left side. IIS is made up of 40+ modules and extensions that live under the Web Server checkbox. You can choose customize to find the individual components or just choose the checkbox to get the recommended components.

What Web PI does is it will either configure the components, like IIS, or download the individual installers and all of their dependencies to make it so you only need to go to a single place to get the product you need.

Can I ask where you were looking for the IIS components? Is there something we can do to make this more clear?

Is there a separate installer for each package in the combined installer? I'm having a little trouble finding the IIS installer. I'm pretty much ready to give up on this installer.

If your installer is stuck with this message "Please wait while we load the latest Web Platform products." , then its possible you are affected by a known issue where the program hangs when their is a failure reading performance counters.

To workaround this

You can download the SQL installer directly from this location.

Yup I have the same problem. And I'm A serious newb at all of this. I wanted to just install

SQL express and got this. And that installer. I fell asleep on it once and it ran for two hours. It has installed some files in C:/programs/Microsoft. I have read all of this post and still do not understand what is wrong. I'm going to write the people in the link that is listed earlier.

Hi, I have the same problem. I went through these steps, but when I listed the .ini files, there was no WmiApRpl, therefore I couldn't do step 5. Any suggestions? By the way I just reinstalled the whole system, and I used the very same Windows install CD - but about 2 weeks ago, on the 'old' system I was able to use Web Installer. Help! Thanks!

Hi Letsgo,

These perf counters are for MSMQ and Active Directory so having these missing is not problem.

Could you send your System and Application event logs to WebPi@microsoft.com ?

Hi everybody. I have the same problem with up to date XP pro. I did everything U ask but still not working. No perf errors but 2 reg key missing:
System\CurrentControlSet\Services\esent\ (esentprf.ini)
System\CurrentControlSet\Services\msmq\ (mqperf.ini)

All that is worse than Alien MarsAttack Language for me !!

Phil_s : Thanks for the spell check. For the error from what I can tell on this there might be some corruption in base counter settings. If you check under %SystemRoot%\System32 you might find some files perfstringbackup.ini . These are taken as snapshots when counters are added to the system. You can try the following but note this may break current counters since this will reset to a prior period.

lodctr /R:perfstringbackup.ini

delia_mad420 : The Status 5 in your case indicates an access denied . Try "Run as Administrator" when opening the command prompt. If that does not work you can try using Process Monitor to log events while you test this. This will identity if you there are and "Access Denied" errors accessing the registry etc. "http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx

Regarding the error and further troubleshooting , the next action would be to gather a memory dump of the process to identify what exceptions are occurring. If you are still stuck at this point you can email webpi@microsoft .com ATT: Richard and I can assist with that.

I'm still having no luck. When I go through the process to fix counters for XP, I'm getting errors. Here's an example:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>lodctr rsvp.ini

Error encountered while updateing text in registry. Status: 0

By-the-way, I like the misspelling in the error message. :)

I had this probel on Vista 64. Turns out, in my case, the performance counter service wasn't running. After starting it and then launching a CMD prompt as admin, then issuing the command lodctr /r the performance indexes were rebuilt. The web installer returned the list of products immediately upon relaunch.

I have exactly the same behavior, and the same entry in the temp file. I have no LoadPerf errors since April. Though I did go through the "fix" process for that anyway.

I have also uninstalled the installer and reinstalled.

How long is that first screen: "Please wait while we load the latest Web Platform products." *suppose* to be displayed. How can we tell if anything is actually happening? CPU usage on the process is zero. Network traffic and disk writes are minimal.

I'm running XP Pro SP2.

Help? Thanks!

finally, by typing the 'lodctr /r' command in prmpt.. it works back
