yesterday i was trying to install IIS in my Vista Ultimate SP1
machine. Fairly simple , Control Panel -> Programs... ->Turn
Windows Features .... -> and tick "Internet information Service"

problems started where the "please Wait while the features are
configured" window would never go away (the progress bar was full). i
left it over night for it to complete but nope. so today i powered off
the laptop since that window won't go away. booting windows up again
brought up the "completing update 3 of 3... 51% compelted, do not shutdown ..." on the
welcome screen, it got to 51% and never moved on.

After hours of waiting i restarted and booted into safe mode. it
quickly passed the 51% mark but it appeared like it reverted back the
installation as no IIS was installed.

so in safe mode i tried installing IIS again using the same above
steps. After 5-6 minutes i get an error saying "error occurred, not all
features have been changed..."

i also tried installing via command line using in safe/user mode using:

start /w pkgmgr /iu:IIS-WebServerRole;WAS-WindowsActivationService;WAS-ProcessModel;
WAS-NetFxEnvironment;WAS-ConfigurationAPI

that fails too returning error 1603 for "echo %errorlevel%"

Can someone please help? not sure what else to do to fix this?
googling suggests that this must be a corrupt "windows Process
Activation service". but how can i fix this? The box for WPAS in the Windows
Feature window is not ticked. trying to install it fails with same
behavior as above.

can someone please suggest a fix. thank you
