load balancing server requiring / at end of URL

I am using two webservers with a load balancing server to direct traffic. I have a problem that requires a / (slash) at the end of the URL. Anyone ever had this happen?

Does Server.Transfer guarantee not to redirect to a different physical server in a web farm load balanced environment?
If "InProc" mode is used for session along with Server.Transfer there should be no issue in a web farm?

IIS Load Balancing based on source IP

I am fairly new to IIS and I have been tasked with setting up a 2 node IIS loadbalanced site. This will be for internal domain use (single Domain). Here is what I want to be able to do. We will have 2 nodes in the NLB cluster. Node 1 will be at Site A (10.10.x.x, 10.1.x.x 10.40.x.x subnets). Node 2 will be at Site B (10.20.x.x, 10.23.x.x, 10.28.x.x subnets). I want to configure a preferred server to use based on the clients source IP address. And if either server fails all requests will go to either node1 or node2. Can this be done?

IIS Failover on Single affinity

Hi guys,

I setup NLB on 2 Windows 2K3 server using IIS 6. Our programmer is using ASP.NET session so I set the NLB to Single affinity. Now my problem is that when my IIS is down on one of the server user is not routed to the other server, unless I remove the server on cluster.

Is there any workaround for this? I found something using httpmon but this is for win2000 server and I unable to find the download for it.

How do I share System.Web.Cache data across server farm?

I am going to setup a webfarm and will be trying NLB to loadbalance but my problem is that I do not have a central storage for my webfarm all webpage application is dump at the local HDD. How do I sync webpage to all the server once the page is updated or new page was added.

I have 3 server farm with multiple apps as virtual directories. Very often due to some maintenance tasks I need to restart the IIS. In a web farm environment ideally I could do it anytime. We haev F5 load balancing with sticky sessions. Is there an easy way to verify that there are no current users using any of the websites? Can for example shut down or stop app pools, wait, check something and then restart IIS? Ideally new request should go to other two servers.

Load Balanced IIS 5 and the HTTP Keep-Alives Enabled setting

I have a Load Balanced web farm with 3 web servers which server web services to a WinForms desktop app. If I set HTTP Keep-Alives Enabled = True, general speed of performance is much better but I get many of these errors: The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server. If I set HTTP Keep-Alives Enabled = False, the errors all but disappear, but the speed of the app lags. Does anyone have a solution for keeping the speed of Keep-Alives but not the errors on a Load Balanced farm? Regards, Eric Bechtinger

NLB 2 defaul hosts

I have a strange situation with NLB cluster. Cluster consists of 2 hosts and work fine. When I add one more host to cluster (third) cluster do not work normally: 1. it converges normally in cluster with 3 hosts: 1,2,3 2. suddenly host 2 said: configuration conflict and drops host 3 from cluster (on host 1 and 2) 3. host 3 in this situation thinks that he is a default host and do not see hosts 1,2. And hosts 1,2 think taht host 1 is the default host. This way I got 2 default hosts in cluster and it is not convergin at all. Help me please!

I have 2 network names. 1 for the cluster and one for the file server resource. When I configure the account, that runs app pools on my nlb, to delegate to the host and cif's service(cluster attached to san), I use the file server name(b/c that's what I specify in IIS file location), right? The person that built the cluster did so w/o creating the computer objects for the cluster name and file server name(we don't have permissions to create the accounts but I can work with the people that do). Can I just create the file server name and spn's for that name and give permission to the cluster service account? Or do I need to create the cluster name object as well?

Flush Server Cache

Hi,

I have my web site on a web farm. Each server with in the web farm has a copy of the runtime. Every time I make a release,

1. I pause IIS on the web server and see that there are no connections and take it out of the server pool.

2. Stop IIS

3. Copy the runtime files

4. Clear all the files in 'Temporary ASP.NET Files' folder

5. Start IIS.

6. Test the web site

7. Add it back to the server pool in the web farm.

Repeat this step for each server in the farm.

Obviously, this is getting very tedious. I scripted MS Deploy so that I copy on one server and the others are automatically synchronized.

But my problem is I want to avoid Clearing Temporary ASP.NET Files. This always requires IIS to stop. Is there a way to automate this process?

Can anybody help?

However, my machine.config file for ASP.net 2.0 does not seem to correspond with the article. Searching for "validationkey" in the machine.config, machine.config.comments, and machine.config.default returns nothing.

I have entered the above validation key (different one of course) right below the <system.web> entry in the machine.config and reset IIS.

The users are still experiencing the same problem as before which is:

Message: Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster.

Question about NLB and how to bind the IP addresses

I have two IIS 6.0 web servers we would like to load balance using NLB. Currently they both have one NIC enabled for the corporate network. There are two web sites that will be load balanced. I do have an additional NIC card that I was going to use for the NLB (going to use Unicast). I have read couple of articles about the proper way of setting this up and wanted to know if this is correct.

Server A:
NIC one (corporate network)
IP address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet:       255.255.255.0
GW:           192.168.1.1
DNS:          192.168.1.1

NIC two (NLB)
Website 1
Cluster IP: 10.10.10.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Web site address: 10.10.10.12

Website 2
Cluster IP: 10.10.10.3
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Web site address: 10.10.10.14

Server B:
NIC one (corporate network)

I have 2 servers in a load balanced environment. There is a virtual directory set up for xyz.com on Server A that physically goes to C:\xyz\documents which is on Server A. Website xyz.com also has a virtual directory set up on Server B that goes to \\Server A\xyz\documents.

If a file is uploaded to website xyz.com from Server A, it can not be deleted or overwritten from Server B (access to the file is denied); and vice-versa, a file uploaded from B can not be deleted from A. I can upload new images from either server with no problems.

Any help would be much appreciated.

IIS 6 webfarm - how to use Webdav?

I want to have a site on my webfarm that allows users to upload and download documents specfic to them. I thought this could eb achieved through WebDAV but now I'm not sure - how does webdav work with NLB?

Am I better using a simple file share at the backend instead as a virtual directory, and if so, how do i get the NLB farm to authenticate each user against the file server?

Finally, if I'm using a single website with a single virtual directory, how do I stop users from seeing the existence of folders that are not theirs?

It's early days on this so I welcome any better ways to acheive this (but must be IIS 6 based at the front end)

I have nlb groups and multiple sites(each site has own application pool).

I would like to have one account that all the app pools run under.

I couldn't get kerberos working(necessary for remote file-share webroot) using the machine accounts but I was able to with a user account.

Do I need to do this for each site(not machine)?

setspn -A HTTP/website1.domain.com domain\service account

setspn -A HTTP/website2.domain.com domain\service account

Or does that cause the duplicate SPN? If so, do I need a separate service account for each site/app pool?

Web garden load balancing

Hi, guys!

Could anyone explain/give a link to explanation on how is load balancing is performed within web gardens (IIS 6)?

Here is a problem I'm facing:

I have 6 WPs in my web garden (app pool)
This app pool serves one and only application (WCF service)
Some of the requests take much time to execute.
As a result, I have 5 WPs that are OK and 1 that is busy (it serves a long running request to DB) However, 1/6 of requests is queued to the busy WPs queue (IIS seems to use simple round robin).

So, things I want to figure out:

Am I correct with my suggestion that IIS uses simple round robin to distribute requests?
Does IIS take into account WPs queue length, or not?
Do I have any chance to interfere with this algorithm?
Is IIS 7 different to IIS 6 as far as web gardens load balancing is concerned?
Does it make any difference which application type is used? I mean WCF and usual web services. In many cases, settings from machine.config and web.config that are applied to web services do not affect WCF services. But for now I'm interested in load balancing only.

I need ot have the TS Web Access and OWA to be able to be reached from the same URL. Is that possible without using Network Load Balancing?
