Can I still use my existing asp.net website account to login?

Yes. If you already have an asp.net website account, you can still login with your existing credentials. Once you have associated your existing asp.net website account to your Windows Live ID, we do recommend that you use the Windows Live ID to log in, so that you have one less set of login credentials to manage.

I cannot change my Windows Live ID password in my "Profile". How do I change my Windows Live ID password?

Is it possible to use a different Windows Live ID than the one I registered with?

Yes. If you would like to use a different Windows Live ID on this site, please submit your request via the iis.net site's feedback form (please reference that your request is about your account on iis.net) and we can dis-associate your Windows Live ID from your asp.net website membership implementation. Once you've received a reply from us, you can then use the "Join" functionality to associate your username/display name with your intended Windows Live ID.

My question is not answered here

Do you know this tool??

The Idea

As you have experienced yourself developing a web application isn’t that easy and quite time consuming. You spend a lot of hours thinking about software design, security problems and of course how to improve end user’s usability.

On the other hand a lot of your users or potential customers have only a limited knowledge about software development or webserver configuration options. For them it’s rather difficult to e.g. “add the appropriate access rights” on a folder or to setup a database. It’s really sad that a lot of people fail or get annoyed by just installing a web application and of course that isn’t the best first impression they should get from your software either.

Seeing an ever growing market for dedicated server systems or virtual private servers (VPS, VSERVER: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vps) starting at low prices and running the Windows Server 2003 operating system it is time to rethink if there are other installing methods available.

If your users have access to a (virtual) dedicated server system they can utilize remote desktop connections to manage it. They can and are used to install software the way they’ve learned to do it on their desktop PCs by just clicking trough a nice little wizard.

The nice little wizard we’ll create in this document will be capable of:

Creating a new website

Adding a virtual directory to an existing website

Creating an application pool and setting up a website/folder as ASP.NET / PHP / Perl application

Creating a new Microsoft SQL or MySQL Database, Logins and Users

Configuring your web application (e.g. web.config) and setting values collected in wizard mode

A lot of user guidance, messages and validations

The process of building your own installer package consists of 3 steps:

Set up the environment

Creating a template for your application (using GenerateConfig.bat)

Customizing this application for your needs (WixEdit)

Find it on www.codeplex.com/wai....

CU

IIS7 has a completely modular setup design which enables
absolute control over the footprint of the web server. GUI, command
line and unattended setup options make it easy to manage the security
and servicing footprint of the web server. IIS7 Setup includes more
than 40 installable features. The new IIS7 core server pipeline
architecture provides a high level of component granularity; we surface
that granularity in user selectable installable components. New to IIS7
setup is the ability to install just the feature modules that you
require, allowing you to deploy very thin, task specific servers as
well as lock out functionality in ways never before possible.

This document provides an overview of Microsoft Windows Vista
and Microsoft Server codenamed Longhorn setup technology and a detailed
examination of IIS 7 componentized...

His article focuses attention on IIS7's modularity, simplified deployment and configuration capabilities, the native and managed code extensibility, and lastly on security, performance, and compatibility. Very prevalent on the minds of everyone, Mike answers the common question "why should you start thinking about IIS, a server application, before the next version of Windows Server, code-named "Longhorn", is even near release?"

"It's important to start thinking about it now because Windows Vista ships with the same full-featured IIS 7.0 bits that are expected to be released with Windows Server "Longhorn," he says. "This means you can immediately take advantage of IIS 7.0 ... and get a head-start in developing and testing your production Web applications."

What he asked me was whether there was a way where he could create an off-line backup of his web site. Of course, there are whole sections of the industry these days that are devoted to such things, but he wanted a simple way to create a backup on his home or work computer of his web site that is hosted at an ISP. Some time ago I wrote a FrontPage VBA macro...Read More

Microsoft has corrected this problem and released an update that will allow you to run Windows Vista (and IIS7) on your desktop but still manage your Windows Server 2003-based services. The fix, outlined in the Knowledge Base article 930056, requires you to create a new script, run this script in an elevated command-prompt, and create a new shortcut.

After sparking this debate, Schnackenburg explained why he feels that this question isn’t an easy one, citing “some interesting new features” introduced in IIS7.

For example—as noted by Schnackenburg—IIS7 is built from the ground up with more changes in product features than users have seen in several versions.

Released with Windows Vista, IIS7 is available now for developers to start working on this platform for the future. And IIS7 on the next server release, Codenamed “Longhorn,” will continue to use the same code base, but will include even more features and innovations.

Regarding the controversy he stirred up, Schnackenburg knows the jury is still out, but he notes that “Microsoft has certainly made great strides in accommodating the needs of different flavours of administrator.”

IIS.NET joins other strong Microsoft Online Communities

You may have noticed the recent changes to the IIS.NET site. Written by multiple authors on the Microsoft ASP.NET and Ajax team, this article explains to ASP.NET users how best to upgrade to Windows Vista and how to handle the most common problems they might encounter after this upgrade.

Here’s an excerpt from this article:

For ASP.NET application developers who move to the Windows Vista™ operating system, IIS 7.0 represents a significant advance over earlier IIS versions because of increased security and the new application possibilities offered by IIS 7.0 Integrated mode. Most developers who move to Windows Vista will be upgrading from the Microsoft Windows® XP operating system to Windows Vista and will upgrade their ASP.NET applications in the process or else will install, on Windows Vista, ASP.NET applications that were developed on other Windows operating systems . This paper details important post-installation and post-upgrade configuration steps that must be performed for applications to work on the new operating system and also describes changes between Classic mode and IIS 7.0 Integrated mode that affect ASP.NET applications, and how to work around these known problems.

Strahl of CoDe Magazine asks "Are you ready for IIS 7?"

In his recent article, Rick Strahl of CoDe Magazine took time to ask his readers if they were ready for IIS7. This highly-rated article outlines the high points of IIS7 and why Strahl is advocating usage of IIS7. As Strahl says, "I've been running IIS7 exclusively since early this year and I run Windows 2003 server on my live site."

There's a lot to like about IIS7 on Windows Vista and while there are some major changes under the hood, Microsoft has done a great job of keeping the server compatible with existing applications. Kudo's on the foresight of building the configuration support for IIS7 into ASP.NET 2.0 a year before IIS7 ships! The new features and removal of limitations are a huge bonus for me and I think for the first time I feel confident that I don't need to install a server operating system on my development machine and still have access to the full Web server functionality.
