SMTP settings removed after windows update.

Hello everyone. This is my first post on here. I looked all over the web but couldn't find anyone complaining about this so I thought I was ask here.

I worked with several customers today who reported no email being received by their mail server. All of these customers had IIS relay servers forwading to their Exchagne 2003/2007 servers. Upon investigation I noticed that all of them had their remote domains and alias removed. Normally I would chalk it up to coincidence, but I had 8 total customers report this problem. Adding them back resolved the problem but I'm curious as to what could be causing this. This does not appear to be happening on Exchange server but just IIS relay servers running SMTP.

I noticed there was a patch released on tuesday that dealt with a vulnerability discovered in SMTP so I tested this out by installing this patch in a lab and could not reproduce this problem even with all windows updates....

     Is anyone else seeing this?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Yeah, this happened to me this morning - the list of kb articles my server installed overnight was, if it's any help:

    981332
    979309
    978601
    890830
    976323
    979683
    980232

I'm running 64 bit Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter and using IIS 6 for SMTP server (which I'd really rather not do, but IIS 7.x doesn't have an SMTP grrr!)

The server lost all the settings.

    [edit]

The smtp server lost all the relay and authentication settings

I guess http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976323 is the problem!

This happened on my server as well.  64-bit Windows Server 2008 Web Edition R2.  Reapplying SMTP settings in IIS6 fixed email sending from the server.

Yes, I installed 2008 updates on our eCommerce server last night and today all email is screwed! No email confirmations to customers, no shipping confirmations, etc... I am a developer, not and administrator. This has screwed our online business for the day. I am phucking pissed! Someone needs to be staked up out front of One Microsoft Way this morning.

Thanks for the updates folks. Looks like a patch not to install at the moment.

oh probably a good idea to install it, just make sure you take a copy of all your settings and re-enter them after you apply the patch.. A
