I have my Wordpress site running smoothly and I installed it too using Microsoft Web Platform Installer. Is your PHP configured properly. I mean a simple PHP test page working fine.
Also can you post the detailed error message you are getting. You will need to turn off "Show Friendly HTTP request' feature in IE. How to do that is explained at

Test php page works fine.
When "Show Friendly HTTP request" is off, I get a blank page. When "Show Friendly HTTP request" is on, I get a 500 error.

Were you able to finish the installation using Web PI? I mean did you launch the site's page and were able to run through Wordpress installation? Or you are getting 500 launching the site from WPI finished page.

No, just says:
This error (HTTP 500 Internal Server Error) means that the website you are visiting had a server problem which prevented the webpage from displaying.
For more information about HTTP errors, see Help.
The web site logs? Nothing really...
