Thanks for your reply. On another forum, [I am desperate to get
this resolved!] it was suggested that I uninstall all SQL apps, use
windows installer clean-up to remove debris, log in as Administrator
and run the file SQLEXPRADV_x86_ENU.exe - that didn't work, the install
stopped altogether after the Support Files were installed. Logged in
again as a user with Admin rights, then "Install As Administrator" and
the same fault appeared, as below.
I get the following message part-way thru' the final install [after passing all tests and making all selections, etc.]
====================================================
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup
------------------------------
The following error has occurred:
Invalid instance ID: "null".

====================================================
As before the web help link says "no further info available, but thanks for telling us" - not helpful at all!
I
selected the Default button for the Instance, yet it still says in the
failure report that it's null ! In previous attempts, I have selected
the typed-in Instance with the name left as SQLExpress and other names
at various times. Is this the correct Instance or is there another
field somewhere that I missed? I don't understand why the process
seems to carry on for more than 15 minutes after this error message
displayed, when clearly at the end it is going to say the SQL Engine
failed to install. Why doesn't it stop and explain which entry is
null, and allow the user to correct it before continuing? Better
still, why not have the program not accept a null Instance Id, enter a
default Instance ID itself and carry on installing after that?
I
have been an Access database developer for 15 years as a freelance
contractor, and am currently studying for an IT Masters degree, so I am
hardly computer illiterate, but this has me totally baffled!
This is the config file at the end - as you will see the Instance Id is filled
