Problem installing SQL Server Express 2008 Management Studio on Windows 7 Professional

Hi, i have recently installed Windows 7 professional on my PC and while trying to install SQL Server Express 2008 Management Studio using the Web Platform Installer i ran to some issues. The SQL Server Express 2008 Management Studio cannot be installed and the error message i get reffers to konwn compatibility issues. When clicking to online help, i get the message "Your version of SQL Server 2008 isn't compatible with this version of Windows." and the help link is redirected to SQL Server 2008 sp1 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968382) download page which i have already installed. Notice that i have also succesfully installed Visual Web Developer Express with sp1. Any ideas on how could i install SQL 2008 Management Studio Express? thanks in advance, Dimitris

    Hi Dimitris,

I believe this is telling you need to re-apply SP1 after the installation of the management tools. I'll check on this and post back.

    Thanks

    Hi Richard,

yes, but the problem is not after the installation of the management tools, but the installation itself that keeps failing.

    regards

I tested this and received the same message when I launched the installer  , however if I choose to continue with the installation it will proceed.  Are you seeing the same behavior or something else ?

I was able to get this to install by making a small change to the registry. I'd looked up the .net version in the registry

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\v3.5\

    according to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/198931/how-do-i-tell-if-net-3-5-sp1-is-installed

What I noticed is that while Win 7 comes with SP1, the registry entry had the "SP" key set to 0. I changed it to 1 and the SQL 2008 installer worked correctly after that.

    Hi,

like Richma noted, i tried to continue the installation despite the compatibility message and everything worked as expected. Note that i diidn't install management studio via the Web Platform Installer, i used the sql server 2008 express with advanced services setup instead.

    thanks

    Hi Dimitris ,
the last question you answered "exactly the same"  was directed at CatalystMoon who posted on this thread who I belive might be encountering another error so I was trying to confirm this.
