Just upgrade my server to 2008 and having trouble

I just decided to upgrade from a windows 2003 server in a work group to a windows 2008 sp2 server as a domain controller.  I was hosting a website on the 2003 server and have had no problems.  I found a guide online that gives you 13 easy steps to setup an iis7 website from scratch.  I followed the instructions to the T.  I think I am missing a step somewhere.  When I setup the website the globe has a red x.  I clicked the restart and the x went away but when I click on the browse to website link I get the 404 error.  What account do I need to have permission the folder so the website can be accessed.  Maybe I am missing something else but all help will be greatly appreciated.  My website is behind a d-link route that has port 80 forwarded to the server.  I had no issues getting to the website previously. I did need to add dns service to the server in order to make it a domain.

Also when I click the Test connection button I get a cannot verify access to path under authorization.

It's not generally recommended to run IIS on a DC for an internet facing site.

Domain Controllers don't have the concept local users.  You'll either need to A) create a domain account, then run your app pools using a custom account.  B) Grant network service the appropriate permissions.  Look in the event log and see if there are any obvious ererors.

Post your IISLogs and let us see a sample request.

Re: Just upgrade my server to 2008 and having trouble

Please forgive me for my ignorance, I am completely new to server 2008.  But I cant seem to locate where the log you requested can be found.  I have no problem creating s domain account but how I get it to run the app pool.

Also I cant even see the website by using 127.0.0.1 or local host or by site name, or by server ip address.

I think I just stumbled on the log.

I only see /favicon.ico is 404, the rest are fine.
What do you plan to do? let's do it one by one.

    1) how are you accessing the site now? http://localhost? if you browse via IP what do you get?
    2) the log files is stored at inetpub\logs\logfiles\w3svcX - x is site id
    3) what's the deal with app pool id? you like to change it?

    Cheers,

Re: Just upgrade my server to 2008 and having trouble

Currently I am not able to access the site at all, internally or externally.  I don't even know what the favicon.ico file is.

    2.  I think that is what I posted

    3.  The apppool changed as I typed in the site name.  that is also how the tutorial had it what should it be?

Re: Just upgrade my server to 2008 and having trouble

    1) what do you see when you access http://localhost from the machine
    2) Ok, but no 404 error. Fav.ico is just the browse icon for the page, nvm can ignore this first.
    3) This is the app pool name not app pool identity of account. by default, new secure feature in IIS 7, when you create a new site, it will auto create an app pool for the worker process with network service as app pool id, can ignore this for now also.

so go back to 1) what do you see ? anything in event viewer?

    Cheers,

     1.  I get a 404 error, which log in event viewer do you want me to look at? I just checked them and I have nothing in the last hour, and nothing 2 events in the last 24 hours and neither are related to IIS or permissions or accessing the folder that the website is stored in.  Even when I go to the log file for the website I only see on long file and it was last modified almost 3 days ago.
