SQL Server 2008 Express Install Error

I am trying to install SQL Server Express and I am getting the following error: "The SQL Server registry keys from a prior installation cannot be modified. To continue, see SQL Server Setup documentation about how to fix registry keys."

From what I am reading on the web, the only way to fix this is to change the registry.  Is this true?  Is this the only way to get this software to install?  Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

The following blog has  a good walkthrough for identifying the issue.

    http://blogs.msdn.com/petersad/

Based on this, this is could be a permissions problem on the registry keys mentioned and if that is the case then yes you would have to modify the permissions.

Thanks for your help.  I read the blog and used the regedit to change the permissions.  That is exactly what the problem was.
