    authentication problem with IIS6

I have Exchange 2003 running on Server 2003 Enterprise.  When I try to go into the SMTP vitual server, it says that "The virtual server instance is not running.  Please start the virtual server and try again.".  So if I ignore the fact that it thinks it isn't running (though it says it is, in services), I get a popup saying "IIS Logging - Unable to read the current logging plugin value." and the "Active Logging Format" dropdown is blank (though enabled).

If I go into IIS Services Manager, and click on the system (local), I get an "Access Denied" window pop up and prompt for authentication.  If I then login as the same user I'm already logged in as, it allows me in (almost like it doesn't see the "initial" login, or something).

The user I'm logged in as is a domain admin.  And if I type in the same authentication info as I'm currently using, it allows me in to IIS.

I've spent quite some time trying to dig up info on this with Google, and I see lots of people with the above mentioned messages, but no actual solutions.  In one case, reinstalling IIS seems to have fixed it, but this is an Exchange Server, and reinstalling IIS is not really an option.

    Any info would be appreciated.

Seems like Metabase permission issue. Is Domain admin part of local admin group?

Can you download Metabase Explorer from IIS Resoruce Kit tool and then open it on that box and check the permissions on each node. You may want to compare the permissions with another working box. If there is a difference, ensure the permissions are same.

BTW, do you see any errors in Event Viewer?

    HTH.

Thanks for the info.  It is in the local admin group.  It was working fine until this week...there were no updates applied to the server.

I'll download Metabase Explorer and see if that gives any further info.

The only error in the event viewer happens every five minutes.  It is:

The MAD Monitoring thread was unable to connect to WMI, error '0x80070005'.

Interesting.  Trying to install IIS6RKT to get Metabase Explorer, and I get the error:

    1628: Failed to complete installation.

The event viewer says that MSI completed successfully.  There's nothing added to the Programs menu.  What's the command-line command to run it?  I'll see if it maybe installed it anyways.  Though this points to some kind of deeper issue, I would think.

I think it's worth posting a follow-up to this, so hopefully Google will cache it for future reference.  Since nobody seemed to know what was wrong (took four techs through a call to Microsoft to find this).

The problem ended up being NTFS permissions.  I don't know what messed them up, but they were not what they're supposed to be.  It's addressed in the permissions in KB909444 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=909444).

If you can't get to WMI (Computer Management, WMI Control) with a "WIN32: Access Denied" error, there's a good chance this is the solution.
