IIS installed on a logical partition other than c on windows 2008 server

     Hi,

Our data centre has built win2k8 server with IIS on one logical c: partition. We are constraint to RAID 1 only with two physical drives. Our exsiting web server was win2k3 with RAID 1 with two logical partitions c (system)  and e (data).

We would like to keep our existing setup i.e keep wwwroot\inetpub on the E(data) drive with all of our Virtual directories present, as oppossed to having everything on the C drive. The data centre say that there is no added value in having 2 logical partitions due to the parent pathing feature in IIS 7.0

Personally I feel the data centre just build the servers without consultatation and now are trying to get out of rebuilding the servers. Can someone out there explain whether having 2 logical partitions C(system) and E(data) is better then just having one logial partition C(system) coupled with data.

Having RAID 3,4,5 and further partitions logial or physical is beyond the scope of this question.

    Thanks in advance.

For IIS there's no substantial reason to have separate logical partitions on the same RAID.  Logical partitions may help in organizing security and access, but there's no performance or data stability reason to use them.

     Jeff,

Thank you for your reply. In my experience it has always been standard practice to keep separate your System and Data partitions. So i am not sure why the change now. Our existing setup was the same raid 1 iis 6 and win2k3 but with 2 logical partitions. So do you feel that there is also no advantage here also?

Also when you say "no substantial reason" what advanatges do you feel are present please?

    Thank you

You can freely move the files on \inetpub, however the IIS binaries will stick with the system partition. Just make sure you configure all reference in config file to the new path, including the loggin, appPool temp dir/etc.

Ideally you would have separate physical disks for the OS, Web Content, Pagefile, and IIS Logging, although I realize that budget constraints and hardware limitations prevent this from being standard practice.

I suppose there could be security implications to having the OS and Web Data on the same logical drive, if you were to place each group of files on a separate partition it would reduce the risk of compromise. I have also heard that it improves web server performance because the system files would not be indexed, but I am not really sure on that one.
