Error installing SQL Server Management Studio

I'm trying to install SQL server management studio and I'm getting an error message "Please install SP1 for Visual Studio and try again."  This is a Windows Vista box.  I don't have Visual Studio 2008(Standard or up) installed, but I do have the 2008 Express versions (Web Developer, C#, and C++.)

I tried to down load SP1 for VS2008, but it told me that I don't have any applicible products and didn't let me install it.  What is causing SQL Server Management Studio from installing?

     Thanks,

     Bob

Re: Error installing SQL Server Management Studio

    Hi Bob,

Per the FAQ here   there is no SP1 update but full versions that upgrade the earlier version.

There is a link on the right of the page that will take you to the installation page for the SP1 installers. I have not tried the SQL installation with 3 existing Express versions  so I am not sure if you need to upgrade all versions or not.

Re: Error installing SQL Server Management Studio

Apparently, ALL versions of Visual Studio Express have to be updated to SP1, including my seldom used Visual C++.  I upgraded this and got a different error.  I then uninstalled ALL SQL server 2005 and 2008 products and then the web installer installed SQL Server 2008 with the management studio just fine.

    Thanks for the help.

    Bob
