Slow access to IIS7 across tiny LAN

On a dedicated test server box, I did a clean install of Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and then IIS7. On the server, I access http://localhost or http://192.168.10.100 and the default IIS7 logo appears instantly.

However, If I access the server box from my Vista Business client machine using http://192.168.10.100 it takes 25 seconds to connect and another 10 seconds to  download the graphic.

My understanding is that DNS would not be used because I an entering an IP address. Hence, there is nothing to resolve.

The LAN is a 100 Mbps Full Duplex with only my client computer on the network. There is another Windows file server on the network and accessing it is extremely fast. Browsing the Internet using my Vista machine is very fast as well.

Any ideas why accessing the IIS7 web server across the LAN is soooooo sloooooowwww?

Is it?  Or is the app slow?  What have you done to diagnose this?  IIS logs?  Request Tracing?  Any network diagnostics?

    Jeff, thanks for your reply.

There are no applications on the web server yet. As a simple test to ensure IIS7 is working, I am referring to accessing the standard HTML file located at: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\iisstart.htm on the server by using the IE browser on my client machine and pointing to http://192.168.10.100

It's a fresh server install, with the hard disk drives reformatted, using default settings of the operating system and IIS7, with service packs, and no antivirus program on the test server to slow things down.

The network is literally a 4 port 100 Mbps unmanaged switch (hence no diagnostic capability) connecting the client and server together. But, I do not believe the switch is the issue because copying large volumes of files (e.g. 5 GB) across the network (i.e. the switch) from the client to another windows file server is fast.

I am relatively new to IIS7 and do not know how to diagnose. Any pointers or help is appreciated.

I found out that my LAN computers couldn't access each others IIS pages but they could see their own using their LAN IP or localhost (i.e. http://localhost/iissstart.htm). After looking around for the problems I found that you have to use the firewall settings to set the inbound rule for Web traffic which is set to no by default. That made it all work.

My issue was not that of connectivity failure, but rather very slow responsiveness.Hence, I did not have to change any firewall settings.

What I did was: do a complete reinstall of Windows Server 2008, then added IIS7, (using the same process as on the first install) and the problem disappeared!!
