What authentication module is enabled or did you verify that the authentication is enabled on the web site?

Anonymous authentication is the only one enabld on all sites even on the default web site which works but not on the created web sites.

What is the app pool identity set?

Can you run Process monitor and check if there any access denied errors?

the app identity is applicationPoolIdentity which is new to me.

I havent ran process monitor yet but I think I know how. I need to install it first. I have used it before.

Thanks but I fixed this issue.  I had to add a user and grant permissions to one of the folders or change application identity to impersonate.

Re: error 401 in IIS 7???

    Hello every one,

My problem isn't too diff, so i don't want to make a new post. I hope that you lot wount mind and that some one would be able to help me out.

    My issue:
We have two physical sites, each site has its own dedicated internet line though a proxy to the world, but we have a second line inbetween us, for internal comunications.

priviously site2 was a subdomain, now we are one domain with 2 dc's either site, our servers are replicating as normal.

Our web server is a win2008 ii7, with php and asp, it resides at site1 and it uses nt logon authentication. Our internal uses can connect to our intranet and access everything as normal as they are authenticated just as fine.

However, when our users goto site2 or even the users at site2 try to access the intranet they are given the 401 error, I asume that because the dc's at site2 do the logon authentication and our webserver is at site1 it does not accept the users as authenticated from site2.

This is the case even for administrator account, but i can ping the webserver from site2 fine and i cann access its shares with out having to type in extra credentials, i can even access the webroot dir.

Can anyone please shed some light on this please.

Thank you very much in advance.

Re: error 401 in IIS 7???

I have the same problem with a 64-bit Windows Server 2008 R2.  IIS 7.5 is installed, I added a new website and created a test aspx page.  I tested the page using a test account on a test machine and I was prompted for credentials before I get the following message: 401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials.
You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.

CluceOSI solved the problem by adding a user to the folder.  I think there has to be another way.  Any solution?  Thanks in advance.

Re: error 401 in IIS 7???

I answered my own question by adding a domain group of users to the folder's ACL.  Apparently, the problem lies with ACL.
