Sorry to hear PI could not start for you. Did you get WebPI installed on the machine successfully? Which platform are you running PI on?

Re: Unable to install web platform

I was also unable to install, and the installer requested that I post to the forum. My system is as follows: Windows 7 RTM with all updates running on Virtual PC 2007 SP1. The Virtual PC 2007 SP1 is on Windows XP SP3 with all required updates. No application currently installed on the Windows 7 RTM.

    Finally got mine to work...

I was having problems trying to get the platform installer to work too and then I decided to do a windows update. Before it let me do an update, it told me my time and date on the computer did not match up to the current date. So, I checked my date and time on my computer and it was totally off like a year and a month. I decided to skip the windows update and try the installer again to see if that was the issue. Well, sure enough it was oddly the problem and it worked. Weird. I hope it helps for others having this problem.

Re: Finally got mine to work...

Hi, it looks like you're having some trouble with our bootstrapper that makes sure you have .NET and downloads the correct MSI for you.  You can download the MSI directly and install it yourself (x86 version: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=146053, x64 version: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=146055) to get WebPI up and running.

We'd like to find out what problems people are hitting through.  There should be a log file at %temp%\webpi_launcher.txt after you see the error message while trying to install WebPI. An easy way to view the file is to bring up the "run" window from the start menu and type "notepad %temp%\webpi_launcher.txt".  If you could repro the issue and then send us the information in the log file we can try to track down the issue and make a fix for it.

    Thanks,
    Andrew

Re: Finally got mine to work...

    Andrew,

Thank you. When I tried the the link directly, I thought it was going to work, and then it started to install and brought the same error as everyone else has been receiving.

The contents of my webapi_launcher.txt file are as follows:

    Method '_wspawnl' failed. Failure: 0x643
Failed to install the Web Platform Installer MSI. Unable to launch Web Platform Installer.

After some inspection, I thought I'd try to uninstall the v1 of Web Platform Installer that currently resides on my machine. That was installed last October, before I updated my Windows Vista installation to the Windows 7 RC. Attempting to uninstall that results in the same error as been reported here.

What I ended up doing was removing the registry entry of the previously installed Web Platform Installer, and it worked fine. I wouldn't recommend this for most people, but if you're interested, the registry key to delete can be found here:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\

    Thanks,

    Dan Atkinson

Re: Finally got mine to work...

Hi Dan. This is very interesting. What should happen is if you had v1 of the Web Platform Installer running the v2 installer should uninstall v1 and then install v2.

From you description of the problem is sounds like v1 was unable to uninstall on your box. Is that right? That might explain why v2 was unable to install. Do you know if it was v1 beta, v1 RC or the final v1 version? What error messages did you get trying to uninstall v1?  I believe the error messages people were talking about earlier in the thread were related to v1.

Do other people hitting this problem in the thread have Web Platform Installer v1 installed? What happens when you try to uninstall it?

    Thanks,
    Andrew

I am going to now attempt Dan Atkinson solution to see if it works for me.

    My log shows:

    Method 'InternetOpenUrl' failed. Failure: 0x80072EFF
Failed to download Web Platform Installer MSI. Unable to launch Web Platform Installer.

Upon searching, I found the thread https://forums.iis.net/p/1157756/1904197.aspx showing issues with the browser used. My default browser is firefox, but I'll try IE and see if it makes a difference.

Using IE8, I get a similar error as the previous post.

    Method '_wspawnl' failed. Failure: 0x654
Failed to install the Web Platform Installer MSI. Unable to launch Web Platform Installer.

I do not have the registry entry listed above.

Re: Unable to install web platform

Could you try to download the Web Platform Installer MSI using the links I posted above? Are you able to download the MSIs using IE?  What happens when you try to install the Web Platform Installer using the MSI?

    Thanks,
    Andrew
