    IIS6 to IIS7

I had a customer the other day which had to move a bunch of websites from a shared Windows 2003 server with IIS 6. I was able to zip them all and export the site-configs to XML.

So when I wanted to setup the websites on the customers new server with IIS 7, I went looking for a “New website (from file) feature similar to the one in IIS 6. But where was that?

I couldn’t find it and there seemed only to be a regular New Website feature.

Googling it didn’t give me anything useful, and right now my only conclusion is that Microsoft has removed the feature. That would be really strange, since it was quite a relief when it arrived in IIS 6, but it wouldn’t be the first time Microsoft either removed a useful feature og has forgotten to implement it again in the a version.

IIS 7 has a completely new configuration system, so to ease the migration effort, you may check out Microsoft Web Deployment Tool (MSDeploy),
