ARR v2 RC Memory Cache Duration Change

I am looking for some detail on the change in Memory cache duration for the RC release. Specifically I am referring to caching at the Server Farm level as displayed through the server farm Caching form.

    • In Beta 2 the Memory cache duration defaulted to 5 seconds.
    • In the RC the Memory cache duration defaults to 60 seconds.

It sounds like there has been a significant change in thinking about memory cache at least from a default perspective.  Can you give some of the reasoning for the change so that we can determine the appropriate setting for our deployment scenario?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jim

You are absolutely right.  We did change the default setting from 5 to 60 seconds.

We made this change with the CDN customers in mind where 5 second caching was simply too short (ie. Publicly available Internet contents that are cache-able don't really change every 5 seconds.  And by keeping it at 5, ARR will have to check for the "freshness" unnecessarily too frequently.)

In our testing that simulates CDN, we determined that 60 was more appropriate default value that balances between performance and resource consumption.

Won, thanks for the providing some context to that change.
