  Authentication problem in new installation of IIS6 Reply Contact Hello,  I installed IIS6 using my windows XP CD and installation completed successfully.  I haven't changed any property or any values after installation. But when I tried to view http://localhost/ the browsers displays a dialog box asking for password.  So, I viewed the properties of IIS manager and the anonymous login is enabled.   I don't know what is the problem please help me.

  Re: Authentication problem in new installation of IIS6 Reply Contact Hello, Does it allow you to view the page after entering valid windows account credentials?  You may also want to check to ensure that "Windows Authentication" is unchecked in the site's properties in IIS. It's likely that the anonymous user account (IUSR_yourmachinename by default) does not have NTFS read permission to your wwwroot folder and files. gbalachander: I installed IIS6 using my windows XP CD FWIW ... Though its 100% valid.   Then in the properties I checked the checkbox "Windows Authentication". Then I used my Administrator account to login but then also it failed :(

  Re: Authentication problem in new installation of IIS6 Reply Contact Hello, As Tom stated, it sounds like the anonymous user account does not have permissions to see the files you are trying to access. Go to the properties of the home directory for your site, and ensure the user account (typically IUSR_yourmachinename) has at least Read permissions on the folder and files.
