  Setting up multiple lan websites using shortnames Reply Contact I am at a really frustrating point where I am trying to host 5 intranet sites on my IIS Win2003 Server that are able to be accessed from any PC on the lan by typing: http://production/ , http://staff/ , etc.  I know there has to be a way to do it because my old workplace did it and they were hosting it on a Win2k3 Server through IIS... I just need little pointer in the right direction. I have been told it can be done by adding .local but would prefer to have a more streamlined and direct path such as http://production/   Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  :-)

  Re: Setting up multiple lan websites using shortnames Reply Contact It's your WINS servers that handle short names like that.  Your network admin should be able to help you.  In IIS you would then add the names you want to use for each site as host header entries.   Re: Setting up multiple lan websites using shortnames Reply Contact  I thought it might have been a dns issue but the kicker is I have no idea how to make all of the sites(http://production/ , http://staff/ , etc point to the server's static ip 192.168.1.10.   Is this changed in IIS or in Administrative Tools > DNS? How do I actually get it to point to C:\inet\www1\ for the production pages at http://production/ and C:\inet\staff\ for the staff pages at http://staff/  ?  :-S   Thanks.

We don't have a network administrator... I was the one that did it all... Now they want things I've never had to learn... Much to my embarrassment now.  :-(

I use DNS and WINS wrongly as interchangeable at times. http://www.iisportal.com

  Re: Setting up multiple lan websites using shortnames Reply Contact  I can put the server on a domain and use dns and active directory to make the files available at the http://staff/ and http://production/ location, but the PCs are running in a work group and there is 2 laptops and a desktop that are unable to use domains to connect (Vista Home Premium). Is there a way to bridge the gap? I feel like I'm taking 2 steps forward and 3 steps back.  :-(  PS thanks for your help so far Tom.
